Failing to file is a criminal offense. Depending on the amount of money you earned and the reasons for not filing, you could go to jail. This is serious stuff.
Of course, not everyone earns enough money that they have to file. But if you do, then you had better get that form in.
Good luck!! |

You'll get a delinquent account with the IRS and the interest begins to pile up on your overdue account, depending on how much you owe and the duration of the delinquent account, non payment will lead to jail time. |

It depends.
If you have paid your taxes by having them automatically held out of your paycheck by your employer, and that amount was sufficient to cover your tax debt, then you are just screwing yourself out of any extra cash that you could've gotten by filing a return.
If, on the other hand, you still owe taxes, then the IRS will find you, and make you pay. I would suggest paying them, or getting out of the country. |

None, as long as you don't owe anything. Penalties are based upon the tax that is still owed and unpaid. If you are entitled to a refund you only have 3 years from the due date of the return to claim it.
If you don't file, the IRS can "reconstruct" your return using the information they have available. If it looks like you owe, they WILL be in touch. If it looks like THEY owe YOU, they'll usually just drop the case.
Things like prison time are generally reserved for significant cases of tax fraud or tax evasion. Failing to file if you have a refund due isn't prosecuted; the IRS just gets to keep you money until you do file. |
