Christy H | How much trouble would a 18 yr old get into for lying on taxes? or not paying federal taxes? |

As much trouble as anyone else -- you think being 18 gives you special rights to rip off the government? If you have a job and make enough money to have to file a tax return, you better -- because your job sends a copy of your W-2 in January to the IRS, and they will notice if you don't file a return. |

Same as a 15 year old or a 54 year old. There is no ageism in taxation. At the very least, they WILL collect what is due. Your only choices are voluntarily or by force. |

Age has no bearing!
First, is there even a requirement to file or pay tax? That depends on the amount and type of income.
Assuming there is a filing requiremetn, here's the skinny: When you sign you are stating "Under Penalty of Perjury..." that the facts represented are "true correct & complete."
Generally, most understatements of tax are small and subject to minimal monetary penalties. It is unlikely that an 18 year old would be in a situation where heavier pennalties come into play.
However, again, the law prevails and penalties are based on the amount of understated tax, not on age. |

as much trouble as a 48 year old person. You've heard the expression "Ignorance of the law is no excuse"
When you purposely lie it's an even bigger issue. You better file a 1040X and plead temporary insanity AND give back the money. I'm going to presume that's why you lied. |

Age is not a factor. If you evade taxes, that is a felony. The punishment will be the same as anyone else who evades taxes.
But I do know that there is generally a minimum amount before they will go after you criminally. CI will generally only pursue bigger cases. For the most part, it's just a 20% penalty for understatment of income and/or overstatement of expenses. |

As much trouble as anyone else, tax evasion is a felony and can lead to jail time. The longer you wait it out the worse it's going to get for you. |

that is some serious stuff, especially with the governments money, you better get a passport and leave the country because you are doing some time for lying |
