How old does a car have to be to be tax exempt?
I have a K reg vehicle and am wondering how many more years I have to wait before it is tax exempt.

Osama Bin Lorry
pre 1973 only

Mental Mickey
You might be waiting a long time!

The 25year law is now a bit of an urban myth. It always used to be true (until 1999 when then-chancellor Gordon Brown had one of his bright ideas in the budget),so now only cars registered before 1973 qualify. So if your car was registered in 1974, that's tough, you'll NEVER qualify!

A car has to be registered before 1973 before it is tax exempt...we had a VW camper and were looking forward to being exempt at 25 years old, but when I checked with ministry of transport I was told it had to be reg before 1973!!!!
Big disappointment i can tell you.

Is it K suffix or K prefix? If it's Suffix (1991-1992) then it won't be. When they introduced the rules it was originally any vehicle older than 25 years. However it was soon discovered that there are a lot of cars out there that would become tax exempt (Duh!) so the rules were changed. What a surprise, the government discovered they were being too generous!!
The tax exemption was therefore frozen at (I Think) 1971. I may be a year or two out, but it was certainly the very early seventies.I believe the old K prefix is exempt but ask DVLA.

It used to be 25 years, but just before one of my bikes became eligable they changed it to pre-19?? something or other.

So now you can keep it forever and it wont become eligable.

You're all lucky in America over here I think you keep paying tax until it's not on the road and then you apply for an off road licence

25 years - you'll get there 2 years before me - mine's an M reg and I luv her to bits!
Help! Just seen Jaycie's post and I thought that when I was 83 I wouldn't be paying tax anymore.

In my opinion as long as your car can still be on the road with the engine running, you don"t have to think about tax exemption.

25 years. A "K" reg car will become exempt in about 2012, I reckon.

Vehicles exempt from paying the tax :
Old vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 (historic vehicles)
All vehicles except buses and lorries used commercially, that were constructed before 1 January 1973 may tax in the 'historic vehicle' tax class.

Is the K on the end of the number?
According to the list that puts your vehicle construction
between Aug 71 - Jul 72

Worth asking DVLA!

If the K is on the beginning of the registration it's not such good news - that's Aug-92-Jul-93.

Yep!

Depends on your state. What state are you in?
