How ruthless is the IRS?
What do they have the power to do, and to what extent can they use it?

They can take everything that you have. I would work things out with them.

googie
The IRS will not bother most people who file on time, pay on time and claim valid deductions. They may question you and ask for a review. They may take drastic steps if you falsify on the return, forget to declare income like Dem. Rep. Rangle. If the violations are flagrant enough and you do not pay, they will attach all your holdings, confiscate the bank accounts and every asset they can find.

Superman is nothing against them. So don't lie or cheat and they don't even get close to you. but if you do then you need the help of God.

They have the power to make your life miserable. All you have to do to avoid that is to communicate truthfully with them and honor the commitments you make.

If you have to short someone in your budget, don't let it be the IRS. Debts to them can't be discharged in bankruptcy until they are three years old.

bigdaddy9965
well let me say this if you owe them money do not overlook it, set up payment plan and make your payments, they can go into your cking acct and just take it, they are very powerfull you do not want them in your life, but when i had my problem with them i went to them and we talked and fixed it but they can make your life hell

zealot144
Historically, they took down Al Capone.

Realistically, they have become a "kinder, gentler IRS".

Only, of course, if you cooperate.

Buck the IRS, and you go to jail.

Or worse.

Just ask Willie Nelson.

Ask Paul Hogan and Al Capone.

even better watch the film "catch me if you can " with di caprio and Hanks . Abignalies father was a simple shop keeper who was decimated by the IRS because he did not declare his stationary purchases.

Freeze bank accounts, seize assets, hold future tax refunds, etc. They may even be able to get you for tax evasion but all this would take quite some time of you refusing to pay. Your best bet is to contact them and setup a plan and pay them whatever you can each month. That will prevent them from taking any serious actions againist you.
