Yes I know everyone uses the road, but my question was "pay tax only on the petrol used by yourself". Some people use their car every day and some only at weekends. Weekend users would only pay tax on petrol used at weekends. |

I see where you're coming from but there are some advantages in having the present system (Gosh, I certainly know how to make myself unpopular)
This is similar to the supply of gas or electricity where we pay a fixed amount to contribute to the infrastructure and a variable amount according to our usage.
Having the road tax system allows for the maintenance of a register of vehicles, and helps to enforce the MOT and insurance rules. It ensures that everyone who owns a vehicle pays a minimum amount regardless of the actual use as there are costs involved in maintaining a road system even if it is not being used.
Having said that I, personally, would support a move to abolish the road tax and increase the duty on petrol The tax disc could be replaced with an MOT disc which would help to maintain the monitoring of vehicles. |

Road tax is a valuable source of income for the government they are unlikely to abolish it - the money raised from the road-tax goes directly to the exchequer and not into improving transport. |

In some way weather you drive a car or not you use the roads. If you ever go into a Grocery store and buy milk you used the road in a round about way. Everything we buy was transported there by using our roads. |

I dont have a car..its not cost effective.
I work 12 hour shifts...4 0n 4 Off...
The car would be used less than 6 hours a week.
Tax on petrol and insurance ONLY when it is actually on the road, sounds good to me. |

annoying at weekends and holiday times that the car doesn't even move off the drive but your paying high tax for it to be parked there!!
