It isn't fair. If the government had left the S. S. money alone that everyone paid in, there would not have been a problem. And just think of all the interest it would have drawn. But their high salaries have to come from somewhere, and all the aid we give overseas comes out of our pockets. You don't think they are going to take it out of their pockets, do you? Why are we responsible for the whole world, anyway, especially since most of them hate us? The government will cut everything they can from the ones that really need it to fuel their private jets, buy their designer clothes, have fancy parties, etc. while someone like me or your grandmother can't get our teeth fixed, buy our meds, or a dozen other things. Last year in Missouri where I live, they cut funding for dental work, then last July then reinstated it. However they did NOT put any funds in that account, so they still are not helping us with dental work. So, what was the point of reinstating it? It made the governor look good, at least for a while. O.K., I guess you can tell this is a touchy subject for me. I probably gave you way more info than you wanted, but thanks for letting me vent. |

Deal with it along with many many other situations that will come up in your lifetime. No one guaranteed you life would be fair. (not fare). My only suggestion for you is, do your best to change the laws. This was instituted back in Roosevelt days, depression days and is one of those still on the books sort of speak and has never been challenged. It's purpose was to provide for us in our old age. But the use- fullness of it has long since gone by the wayside. I think most people are pretty capable of planning for their retirements nowadays. But we're just too damn tired to fight this one.. So have at it baby! And best of luck!. |

"Who said life was fair?"
Actually, your grandmother is getting paid social security now by the people paying into social security right now... like from your paycheck.
But, generally speaking, your grandmother might be right. You work the numbers.....
In 1942 when the first Social Security payments were made there were 50 workers to every retiree. Today, there are 3.3 workers to every retiree. By 2020 there is projected to be just two workers per retiree. As the number of workers to retiree continues to decline, taxes will have to increase and benefits decline. (By the time you retire 50 years from now, guess what? Your grandmother is probably right on target.)
But, I need you to please keep working in order to fund my social security when I retire in a few years!!! |

It isn't fair. Life is not fair. It has never been fair. Who told you it was supposed to be fair? Is it fair that you were born in a country that offers Social Security and others are born in countries that offer nothing for the elderly or needy? |

It's not, but that's the system. If you want, find a government, state, or municipal job, they don't contribute to the social security system, but instead have their own form of retirement. |

People say a lot of things but you can count on Social Security being there. There may be a higher retirement age to reflect longer life spans but politicans are not going to scrap the program.
btw: Fare is what you pay to ride the bus. Fair is equitable. |
