How to file a joint tax return?
My husband and I were married this year. He wants to make sure that there is nothing we need to do to be able to file jointly. My boss said all I need to do is change my name at the social security office, and thats it. Is there anything else I need to do or have my employer do?

As long as your legal name matches with your SSN, then you are good to go. Oh, make sure you have the correct name on your W-2s from your boss too. Finally, remember to check the box that says "Married Filing Jointly" when you do your 1040.

Nope. You just need to make sure the name on your Social Security card agrees with the name on your W-2 and the name you'll be using on the tax forms. When you fill out your 1040, just put both your name and your husband's on the same form, include both your incomes, and be sure to check the box that says "married filing jointly" and look at the correct table when you figure the taxes.

Congratulations!

That is all you need to do. A joint return is simply a return with the names and incomes and deductions for two people who are married and want to combine everything onto one return. Congratulations and Best Wishes on your marriage.

if you are legally or common law married at the end of the year, you and your husband need only file a married filing joint return. You don't need to contact social security unless you have changed your name. it is possible to be married and retained your maiden name.

you and your husband might wish to review your w4's for the current year. because your joint return will be adding both of your w2 income, a situation could arise leaving both of your owning taxes for the year. payroll withholding tables don't take into account that your income will be added to another w2 income and withhold as if the only income is your w2 income level. based upon my general experience, both of you should revise your w2 to married and the marriage partner with the larger income clam the correct number of exemptions and the partner with the lesser W2 claiming none.

Don't worry if you haven't changed your name at social security yet; when you do change it the time lag is about six weeks before the IRS receives the change info anyway. You can file your married, filing joint return and put down your maiden name under your husbands. As long as the name and social security number match on the IRS master file you are perfectly okay. When you go to social secuity to make the change take your birth certificate and marriage license or you will be making a second trip.

When you file your return, you just put both names on it, check married filing jointly for filing status, and include both of your incomes. You don't have to do anything ahead of time. You don't even have to change your name with social security, just be sure to put the same name on the return as is on your latest ss card - can be your maiden name or married name.

*If* you are changing your name, get it corrected at the SSA at least 2 weeks before you file. Then ensure that you use that name on the tax return.

It's nice, but not critical, that you change the name on the W-2.

If you are married, you indicate a joint filing status on your 1040 - that's it.

As far as the name change goes, if you're going to use your husband's surname, change everything - driver license, Social Security, credit cards/accounts, etc.
