How to file my taxes for the past 6 years. I don't have any w-2s etc. how can i get the info from the irs?

Ms. Angel..
Call 1-800-829-0922 or 1-800-829-1040 for your W-2's, and call 1-800-829-3676 for forms you may need to file your income tax return, or visit IRS website to download forms,
www.irs.gov, this website also gives you a lot of useful information.

Get your returns filed before IRS files them for you.

Good luck, and just so you know if you have refund for any tax years before 2004 you will not get the refund, but you still have to file the returns.

You can either contact your employers from those years, or contact the IRS, and ask for copies of your W-2's.

If you didn't already hear from the IRS, at least for the earlier years of those years, it's likely that you were owed a refund. For years up to 2003, it's too late to get it now. For 2004, 2005 and 2006, if you had a refund coming, you will still get it if you file.

You should get W-2's from your employer(s), not the IRS. You will need to collect all your financial records for the past six years including any interest income you may have had from savings accounts or investments. This should have been reported to you on a 1099 form, but if you don't have it, you should contact the financial institution from which you received payment. Other income sources may have been sale of stock or other investments, self employment income, tips or business income.

You should also determine any mortgage interest you paid during the six years, business expenses or other deductions that can offset your income.

If you haven't filed your taxes for 6 years, I'd also suggest hiring an accountant who will help make sure you've covered everything and can also sign your return as an intermediary. If the IRS tags you for an audit, an intermediary will be of great value.

You contact your employers and ask them to reissue your W-2's and then do your taxes.

Suzy
Contact an accountant first for advice. Don't try to do this yourself.

You can get the information from IRS by calling. Its no big deal. Just ask that they mail or fax you an information returns transcript for all the missing years.

Can I get copies of my prior year Forms W-2 from the IRS?

The quickest way to obtain a copy of a prior year Form W-2 (PDF) is through your employer. If that is not possible, you can order and pay for copies of your entire return (attachments include Form W-2 (PDF)) from IRS, or order Form W-2 (PDF) information at no charge from the IRS. The IRS can provide Form W-2 (PDF) information for up to 10 years. Information for the current year is generally not available until the year after it is filed with the IRS. For example, Form W-2 (PDF) information for 2005, filed in 2006, will not be available from IRS until 2007.

To receive a copy of your return or transcript, complete and mail Form 4506 (PDF), Request for Copy of Tax Return or Form 4506-T (PDF) Request for Transcript of Tax Return. You should allow 60 calendar days for a response.

Just to let you know though, if you are owed refunds you can only get refunds for the last 3 years of returns (2006, 2005, 2004). That is how far back you can file returns for and get a refund. If you owe the IRS money, there is no time limit for a return in that case.

You can hire a tax professional and get information. All you have to do is sign a Power of Attorney and they can get all the information for you on your behalf. I didn't have any information to file tax returns for 3 years and they were able to obtain everything for me.

You can do it yourself too. But it's easier to have someone to get the information and professionally prepare tax returns for you.
