How to find an employer's tax ID number?
I called my past employer's payroll dpt and the lady wouldn't give me the ID number. She said its against policy.I know could wait for my w-2, but Is there any other way to possibly get the info online?
Additional Details
You can file without your W-2 info. I do have my last check stub. And the lady was not correct because I called other companies and they gave it with no problem. So my only question is is there a way to find that info out without a w-2 or without calling the employer?

wtf2012
look for it on previous year returns. it might even be on your paystub

You wait for your W-2. Seriously. You can't file without the W-2, so you don't need the number. The payroll lady was correct.

check to see who is the company that distributes the checks and then go to Jackson hewwit . com and see if that company is listed. if the company is listed you can pull up all of your info that way or ask to see if anyone else works for that company and they can maybe give you the id number it is listed on the pay stub. on the jackson hewwit web site you should be able to find that Information out. or call the company and request your last pay stub they should be able to fax it to you. or maybe email it to you

Call Social Security, or the Unemployment office, if nothing else this IRS one of them should be able to help you, i'd try State agencies before Federal however, and if they say I'm your friend whats your address, HANG UP!

Their federal ID may be on your check stubs. But unless you have the last stub that shows your total income for the year, it may be better to wait for the W-2 anyway to make sure you know total income and tax withheld.

Im trying to find a FEIN also. If the company is publicly traded (on the stock market), you can find it on the first page of the 10-k, or 20-f forms that they must file with the SEC. the SEC website has a link called filings, hit that, then type in the company, and you should find it that way. If not, you can try to call the payroll company itself and request the FEIN, but when I called ADP, I had to tell them I was an income tax preparer, otherwise I highly doubt they would've givin me the information I needed.

panti-slave2006
did you work for the same employer in the prior tax year? (during 2007) if so, then you should be able to look on last year's Form W2.

as for it being against policy, that may be the company's policy with out being against the law.

You can't get it if they won't give it to you. They don't have to. It will be on your W2, but it's rarely on the paystub. Just wait for the W2. They have to mail it by Jan. 31st.

You will also need the state id number which is on the W2 as well.
