How to work out vat 17.5% on a calculator?

You have price before VAT (y), and you want the price after VAT (x), so multiply the price before VAT by 1.175:

x = 1.175y

Or if your calculator has a % key, type in the price before VAT then + 17.5%.

If on the other hand, what you have is the price with VAT (x), and you want the price before VAT (y), then:

x = 1.175y
y = x ÷ 1.175

do 0.175 multiplied by the total amount.

mutliply by .175 or do it quick in your head

eg 17.5% of £40
10% = £4
5% of £40 is your answer for 10% divided by 2 = £2
2.5% of £40 is your answer for 5% divided by 2 = £1

Easy just take your first answer to get 10% divide by 2 then take this answer and divide by 2 again. Add up all 3 and this gives you 17.5%

Jacsea
If you want to know what the V.A.T. is that you have paid.Divide by 47 then multiply by 7.i.e.If something cost £150 inc.V.A.T the tax would be £22.34

Red Dragon
17.5% of £20 would be 20 x 17.5 (then press %) !
