How will the tax man (inland revenue) find out about extras from rent earned on rooms in my house?
I am renting out rooms in my own house, and declaring most of the rent I get paid. However I have the rent from one of the rooms paid into a seperate account as its from my partner. Can the tax man find this amount and would they have any reason to suspect anything as am declaring the rent freely on tax returns, just not the money each month from my boyfriend???

A tax audit would expose it. But a tax audit would only be called if someone renting from you claimed the rent AND had an audit (large or small) and they pointed at you.

Remember, though....if you have rental income you can claim more expenses like heat, electricity, gas, repairs, maintenance.

So, be careful and good luck.

If you are living with your partner as a couple and he is just paying his share of the overheads, this is not taxable, so you are correct not to declare it.

SPARKFISH
For the small amount you are making from this it is not work the risk
If some one reported you ( usually for malicious reasons .. falling out etc) you would be in loads of trouble and for the sake of saving a couple of hundred pounds a year on the invasion of tax you could easily end up paying thousands of pounds in fines and " gestimated" arreras

Declare it and stay squeaky clean. That way you have no worries, you don't need fear the future and you will sleep soundly at night. Besides, the rest of us contribute to the cost of running the country - why not wholeheartedly join us?

An octopus has eight tentacles, the inland revenue breed octopuses. Many rental frauds, especially on apartments and flats and holliday homes in Spain, and other countries, are being caught out and prosecuted, some of the fines plus interest and back payments are horrendous, you never know who it is that is applying to rent do you.

You are allowed a lodger(s) in your house, I don't know this year's figures, but you can have at least 4K of it untaxed each year (the figure may actually be closer to 5K). You have to declare it though!

They have eyes everywhere, including any disgruntled neighbours. Cash is probably the best policy.

Caribbean Queen
Get your lodger to pay you in cash every month. Simple and untraceable.

PinHead
yeah they could find out, the bank has a duty to report it

nanof2sue
They shouldn't find out, unless someone tells them or you declared the seperate account to them.

You are allowed to earn £4000 from renting out your rooms.
Any amount above, you might get away with it as long as the lodgers don't give it away.

Gotz V
Yes, the government will plant informers in your house, or electronic surveillance.
