weavey wonder
I'm 17.Can I still a tax refund even if my dad claims me as a dependent?
I work at Burger King and I got my W-2 in the mail about 4 days ago. My dad is worried that if I file my taxes(which I admit wont be much),he will not get any noney for claiming me as a dependent on his taxes.

I am really eager to file my own tax return. But if it will lessen my dad's refund or make him unable to file for me at all, then I rather not take the chance.

Thanks!

You can file, just be sure not to count yourself as an exemption, the number of people on your return would be 0, because your father is counting you on his, and you can only get the credits once. Obviously you are not supporting yourself, so you would not include yourself no matter what your income.

All the answers (1-3) are totally worthless.

Dad can and will still claim you as a dependent. You will file your own return (probably a 1040EZ) and not claim yourself.

Yes you can be claimed as a deduction even if you claim yourself. (see the irs website link below.)

Yes, you MUST file tax return if you are required to file.
If someone can claim you dependent, then you can not claim your own exemption.
Read about the filing requirements of a dependent: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-requirement-for-dependent.html

You can both win. Since your are a minor and still financially supported by your dad, he can still claim you as a dependent on his taxes. And, since you worked and are a minor, you can file a separate tax return and you will get back all of the federal taxes that were withheld from your check.

You can file using a 1040 ez form. My daughter filed the same way when she was in high school. It is perfectly okay for you file and it will not hurt your father's return in anyway.

He can still claim you if you file your own return, and it won't change his refund. Just be sure when you file you check the box on your return that says you can be claimed as a dependent.

That i know of only you can file not your dad.

cuddles
only one person can file on an individual each year..
if you file then your dad cant claim you as a dependant..
