I'm 17, work, want to claim taxes. Can my mom still claim me?
I've been working a lot and think I deserve my taxes, but my mom says she can't claim me if I do and won't allow me to do it. I don't think it's fair.

Can she 'claim' me and get the money for me if I file for taxes too?

Yes, your mom can claim you for an exemption. You get one for each taxpayer, spouse, and dependent. You are her dependent. In addition, you can and should file your taxes to get back all the money from the IRS you are entitled to. You are allowed to take the standard deduction which is $5450 without claiming your own exemption. You will have to pay taxes on your taxable income above $5450. I am attaching a 1040EZ for you. Just tell your mom you are not claiming your exemption--which is what she is worried about.

You will file as single and check the box on line 5 on the 1040EZ that says someone else can claim you. Once you arrive at your taxable income, look for that amount on the tax table to find out the tax owed. Then you take the difference of what you paid in in withholding and that tax amount from the tax table to get your refund or amount owed.

Your mom can claim you, but you can both file for tax refunds, you just won't get as much as if your mom did not claim you. But the amount of money that she would get if she claimed you is a lot more than you would get if she didn't claim you.

Did you live with her over half the year? Then she can claim you unless you can show you provided over half of your own support, including paying her reasonable rent for living with her.

You might still get some of your withholding refunded to you, depending on how much you earned and how much you had withheld.

You have it backwards. If your mom can claim you, then you can't claim yourself. She can't "allow" you to claim yourself - the decision is an IRS rule.

Fair? Why should you not pay taxes? You're working. That's part of it.

The IRS doesn't let you and mom choose who gets your exemption - you are her dependent and therefore she claims you. Even if she doesn't claim you - you are not entitled to your own exemption and then no one gets it and you both pay more taxes. IRS isn't fair - get used to it.

No.
It is a little more complicated than that.
How much you earned can affect if she can claim you or not and the total tax liability.
She should figure a tax form with her claiming you as a dependent and one without you and 1 for yourself.
You can file for yourself, but there is a question about "can you be claimed on another tax return?"
If she claims you,she has to claim your income on her return and then you get into get into figuring different tax rates.

Your mother is right. You can write a separate return, but if your mother is claiming you as a dependent (exemption) you cannot claim yourself.

Certainly, you can work out how much money she would save by claiming you as opposed to you claiming yourself then split it up as you see fit (since she probably has a higher tax rate and would gain more from the exemption than you would).

But, unless you are completely independent of your mother and do not accept any money, lodging or food from her, not letting her claim you would be very churlish. I would not even suggest it in those circumstances if I were you.

She can claim you because you are under age, on your papers at work you can claim "0" (zero) which you want to do anyway because that allows you to get the most money taken out of your check so you can get a bigger return. Your mom CANNOT prevent you from filing taxes. Its the law. If you make over a certain amount you MUSt file taxes. You can call up someone who does taxes and get professional advice over the phone for free on your questions. That would be your best bet. But NO your mom cant prevent you from filing because its the law.

I doubt it. But why would you want to file taxes?
