I'm 28 and single, I pay rent and car payment. How many allowances can I claim on my taxes?
I live in California

Rent and car payments are not relevant to the number of allowances you can claim.

Go to the W4 assistant (link below), enter your data and the site will compute a suggested number of allowances for withholding purposes.

Since you have no deductions available for anything obvious, go with one allowance.

Sounds like single/one. If you only have one job, you might get away with single/2 without having to pay when you file, or if you have to pay it won't be much.

Contrary to several answers above, it is good that you mention rent, because that tells us that you do not own your house and therefore do not pay mortgage interest or real estate taxes.

You can claim 1 "for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent" and 1 more if "You are single and have only one job", so at least 2.

Doctor Deth
no more than single and 1 if you don;t want to owe any taxes at tax time

If you have no dependents (children - not pets), then you can only claim one allowance/exemption.

Jss
Rent and car payment has nothing to do with allowances on W4. Normally, you should file 1 allowance.

You can claim yourself and you will have less taxes taken out of your paychecks, but it will "sting" you at the end of the year. You will get a tax credit if you have a 401K or an IRA., but since you are single you will most likely have to pay in, but if you buy a house you will be able to claim the interest on your loan, plus real estate taxes.

How many pets do you have?

JM
you can claim rent. the only way you can claim a car is if it's used for work purposes (beyond driving to and from work, things like if you do sales and use it for sales calls)
