I'm a minor, Do I pay taxes?
I live in New York and this is my first job. I make 7.50 an hour, in addition the job I'm working in is seasonal (meaning after january, I'll no longer be working there). I'm 16 if it matters. So do I pay taxes?

Enough "yes answers" yet?

No student discounts on tax, or kiddie discounts.

You pay income tax on everything you earn over your standard deduction ($5450 in 2008).

You have already had your FICA tax taken out of your paycheck (unless your employer is doing something wrong).

Being a minor doesn't get you off the hook. The requirement to pay income taxes is based upon your income. And assuming that you're also a dependent on your parents' tax return, you pay slightly HIGHER taxes than someone who isn't a dependent. If you earn more than $5,450 in 2008 (assuming that you have less than $850 in unearned income) you will have to file and will have some tax liability. If you earn less than that you won't need to file but if any tax was withheld from your pay you'll have to file for it to be refunded to you.

Yes.

Yes, taxes will be withheld. You will get a refund of the Federal Income Tax you pay in, but no refund of the Social Security Tax.

Whether you pay taxes or not depends on how much income you earn, not on your age. If you make enough during the year (from January 1 through December 31), then you'll need to fill out a return as soon as you get your W-2 (or 1099).

Since you're only 16, your parents are most likely claiming an exemption for you on their taxes. That means you'll need to check "yes" to the box on the 1040 form that asks if you're being claimed as a dependent on anyone else's return.

to hell w/ taxes...

LOL

um i think u do! probably not a lot but u do...i know in nj u do when ur a minor...

If they are taking taxes out, and take out anything for federal income tax, file and you'll probably get some or all of the money refunded. Otherwise if you make under $5450 total for the year, you don't have to file.

Filing rules are the same for minors as for adults

Yes and your employer should be taking them out of your
regular pay. You are not likely to earn enough to pay so you
will get a W-2 around Late Jan to Feb. Then you can fill out
the tax forms (Post Offices) have them available every year
and get a return back.
Ask your boss or parents how it basically works..

Read about the filing requirements of a dependent: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-requirement-for-dependent.html

Yes. When you get your paycheck, the government is taking out Federal and State income taxes. That goes towards medicaid, social security and a bunch of other crap that doesn't work, and only benefits those who don't work.

Also, when you spend that money, no matter what you buy, you're paying sales tax. Meaning, you're paying for crap that doesn't work TWICE, and there's nothing you can do about it.
