I'm a student who made $415 dollars in 2007 do I have to file taxes?
and if I file taxes can the tuititon and fees I paid ($4200 to be exact) be used as a deduction or credit?
I was not employed during 2007 but I did offer services as for eyelash application/extensions. I am single and have no dependants. I currently reside with my boyfriend and he did not claim me as a dependant on his taxes. Can I pay taxes on the money I made and recieve a bit of money back from my tuition/fees?

you don't have to, but if they took out taxes (as shown on the w2 statement that was sent to you.) you can get them back if you do file. 1040 EZ should work just fine, and then you get a check for some $40-60. I imagine. Not bad for 20 minutes work.

You had over $400 in Self-Employment income so you legally have to file and pay self-employment taxes on that. It won't be much though, around $60.

If you have out-of-pocket expenses of more than $15 against that income you'll be below the $400 filing requirement amount and won't need to file at all, however.

You didn't earn enough to have an income tax liability so the tuition won't benefit you.

Since you didn't work for wages subject to withholding there's nothing to be refunded to you and therefore no need or reason to file at all, assuming that you can come up with $15 worth of expenses to bring that $415 down to $400 or less.

If you got a W-2 for the $415, and social security and medicare were withheld, then no, you don't have to file. If this was self-employment (not W-2), then yes you have to file, but will only owe a few dollars for self-employment tax (ss/medicare), nothing for income tax.

Unfortunately your income is far too low to get an education credit, so no you won't get any tax benefit from the tuition you paid.

Lesley
If all you made is $415 then,no you don't have to file THOUGH if it is self employment income you might need to pay Self employment tax (basically it goes into social security). But if you want the taxes you had withheld back then you need to file. You can use tuition and expenses IF your parents can't claim you as a dependent. You should see a tax advisor (many schools have such people around during tax time).

You may qualify for one of the Education Credits. Refer to Pub 970.
You will not owe any Federal tax on $415.

Mel
File you may get a refund.

No, you don't pay income tax, because your income falls below the minimum taxable level.

Even if you did have to pay income tax, your educational costs are not deductible.

The rules and definitions of what is a dependent are precise and detailed, Friends can not be dependents.

You still should. You will get money back still and you never want to IRS to come back and audit you!

Up to the first 4,000 you EVER make on the books is tax exempt I believe... If you have made an accumulated 4000+ and then one year only make $400 then you must pay taxes

No - under a certain amount of money, you don't have to file, but you would more than likely get back whatever was taken out of your pay for taxes - just by your personal exemption, so you should file a 1040 EZ

Ashley
no i wouldnt especially since you did it on the side. you have like 4 years to take your student load as a deduction and collect the interest back as a return, it may even be longer then four years but you wouldnt just file for that reason. it will cost you more to file your taxes for the forms that you would have to purchase for being independent and performing the services that you did. so dont even bother this year.

Saadz
If you receive a W-4 form you have to.
