charlie | I'm having emergency tax taken from me, I don't think this is right? |
I've noticed over the past few months that my tax payments have gone up quite a lot. I also noticed that my tax code had changed. I decided to look up the code and I'm on emergency tax! There was nothing on the Inland Revenue site that explained what it was, but as far as I know you go on it when you start a new job. I've been with my employer for over 4 years.
Can anyone help me understand if this is normal, or if there is a number I can call? The only one I could find was for the employer to call.
Thanks! |

Can you edit with current and past tax codes, and I'll try to answer further? The normal code should be 522L, and all emergency code means is that this is used on a week/month 1 basis, instead of a cumulative one. Tax deducted should be about the same, but no refunds can be made by employer.
If you have not received form P2 (change of tax code) from HMRC, ask employer on what authority he is operating the code he is now using.
The telephone number you would call depends on your location in the UK. Employer would probably know it. You can always call at any tax enquiry centre of your choice, but you will have to make an appointment first. |

Contact the Inland Revenue ASAP, their number will be on the website, you'll be due a tax rebate & you're best to make them aware of this ASAP. Good luck!! |

I agree with the previous comments, you certainly should raise the question immediately with your employer as to why and when your tax code changed.
Employers should not change Tax Codes unless informed to do so by the HMI, so your employer should have paperwork to back up the change. If they do have this paperwork then you need to speak to your Local Tax Office.
However, it is more likely to be human error regarding data input, and this can be corrected simply by them re-entering the correct code which from April 07 would normally be 522L. In your next salary run any adjustments would be made automatically.
If you do not get any joy from your employer then ring your local Tax Office and make an appointment. Take all of your payslips (going back as far as possible) with you and they will work out what your code should be and how much you are owed.
Good luck. |

You should speak to your employer and ask for the details of your tax office. You will stop being taxed on an emergency code:-
1 When the tax office sends your employer (and you) a PAYE tax code, and details of previous earnings and tax paid for that tax year. This enables your employer to deduct the correct tax in future and refund any overpaid tax caused by the emergency code; or
2 At the end of the tax year. Your employer will usually start deducting tax cumulatively, that is, when deducting tax your employer will take into account the amount of tax you have already paid. If, at the end of the tax year, you think you have paid too much tax because you have been taxed on an emergency code, you should claim a rebate by writing to the tax office. |

Real Talk
 |
Isnt there a human resource person for you talk to. Usually they know what is going on with your money as far as the deductions go and if not they usually know who they can ask to find out. Or maybe you can ask a tax prep, person if you file your taxes with anyone or just call a company that prepares tax refunds and they will know what it is and why you are being garnished. Hopefully if it is a mistake, you will be refunded in your tax return. |

if you have been on emergency tax for 4 years then your employer is not doing the wages corretly and you need to get on the the inland revenue immediately - you could be dues a lot of tax back. |

You need to speak to the payroll or HR department at the company you work for and get them to sort this out with the tax office. You may have to fill out a new P46 form to submit to the HMRC (Her Majesteys Revenue & Customs). If they are not able to help you try ringing the local HMRC office, try the yellow pages or directory enquiries, they should be able to at least put you in contact with the office that deals with your information. |
