You do realize that you are asking this in taxes - United States?

I assume UK :-)

I guess you submitted your Personal Assessment forms for Tax Year 06/7 (ended 6th April 07) and this is how you discovered that you overpaid Tax ?

If so, you should have received your rebate 4 to 6 weeks after you submitted the return ..

You need to ring HMRC and ask them calmly and clearly to explain to you what the delay is. If you don't understand the reply, get them to explain it to you until you do understand.
Only they can tell you what the problem is - we don't have crystal balls.

Did they take £600 tax from your salary in 2 weeks? you must earn some salary. Normally they dont give it back as a refund, they adjust your tax code so you pay less tax for a while.

In cases like this it is important to ask the name of every person you speak to and note down the time and date of the call with a resume of what was said. One should begin to do this as soon as possible - ideally, immediately you perceive that there might be a problem, though it often happens that one is well into it before one realises.

It is also important, of course, to have very clear details in front of you of what you perceive the problem to be. Be aware that, although we often think we are very much in the right, there are sometimes things which we have missed. Be prepared to back down gracefully, if you need to, but NOT before you get a full and satisfactory explanation!

Queries like this can sometimes get into an endless loop and the only way to break out of it is to be able to say to the person at the other end that you spoke to so-and-so on such-and-such a date and they told you ... This will bring the person out of 'routine' mode into 'something has gone wrong' mode.

You have to understand that the staff at these offices usually really want to be helpful but the workload is such that they are trained to end the call once the customer seems 'appeased'. I know that sounds cynical but it is a fact. Don't forget, though, that they are only human (yes, they ARE human, like you and me!) and they probably have to meet targets in the number of calls they 'close'. What you have to do is to make sure that your call isn't closed by being on the ball and asking for a definitive answer - as politely and with as much regard for them as possible. If you don't feel that they are cutting the mustard, then take their name and ask to speak to their supervisor - AND request their supervisor to call you back in 15 or 30 minutes if [s]he is busy; ask for their supervisor's name and CALL five minutes after the agreed time if you are not called first.

Do NOT succumb to anger or frustration. It doesn't help. Patience and assertion are the key ... not IMpatience and aggression!

(Yes, you have asked this in Taxes > United States, LOL ... my answer, however, should apply universally!)

How do you know that you are owed this money? Have the tax office contacted you? If so you need to speak to them directly, only they can tell you how long it will take

Hoppity-ES
When you owe them money they take it off you in a flash but when its the other way round and they owe you money expect a long wait.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
