I'm self-employed. If I make quarterly estimated tax payments, do they include Medicare and Social Security?
Do I pay separately for Medicare and Social Security or is this included in a quarterly estimated tax payment?

Thanks!

As a self employed person, you pay all your taxes on your 1040. Your estimated payments will be applied against your income and s.e. taxes (fica etc). As long as you are making the payments and the total is at least 100% of last years tax or 90% of this years, you will not be liable for any penalties.

You do not pay separately. The payments of both taxes should be included in your payments made each quarter with Form 1040-ES.

rockEsquirrel
It should include all on one 1040-ES coupon. Actually, Social Security and Medicare are paid under the FICA law, but self-employed social security and Medicare are paid under the SECA law (Self-Employed Contributions Act).

No.

You include them as the Medicare & SS is part of your 1040 via the total being carried there from schedule SE. I have filed estimated tax for years. No need for CPA here - Taxes 101 at best.

They are different. When I paid estimated tax it was only for income tax on some investments that I had. Check with your tax professional, or get a CPA to handle your tax situation now that you are self employed. I know you must be intelligent, but a business owner needs extra help with the laws that you are now under, and you probably just won't have time to do all this stuff on your own.

candispassion.com
NOPE!!! You need to get a CPA!

You should really be consulting a professional accountant on financial matters, not getting advice like that on here from know-nothings. Pay the fee. They'll probably save you money in the long run.
