Will I be able to get contribution based JSA straight away or is there a gap before I can? Also when would I be entitled to housing benefit and council tax benefit? Of course I'd hope to get a job within a few months of leaving!! |

You would be entitled to no United Kingdom benefits as you have more than the £6,000 limit on savings, I would always check up with the CAB just to be sure. |

If you have over 6k you will get no benefits. The 21k may seem like a nice chunk of cash now but 6 months time when you are still looking for a job and 3/4 of it is gone you might think that you would have been better advised to hang on to your job. |

You wouldn't be entitled to anything until your savings went below £6,000. You have a while before you need to claim anything anyway with £21,000. Thats most people annually salary. |

I have heard some horror stories...I know a guy whose friend got £50,000 or thereabouts and wasn't entitled to anything and just ended up living on it until it was gone. If I were you I would buy something that will hold its value (er, not a deposit on a property then!)...Buy a couple of classic motorcycles (if you have storage for that). They hold their value really well. If you keep the cash you are expected to live on it until its below that £6000 threshold. (Stupid system eh? if you save up money you are penalised...if someone just blows their money they are rewarded!!!). In Germany they make you sell your assets but here they don't. You could also buy art as long as you get good advice and insurance. etc. Dont just sit on the monet thinking something will turn up:- it will fritter away. You could put say £15,000 aside n this way and spend £5000 on a round-the-world- trip! Or you could get a voluntary job overseas (VSO etc). That would perhaps be good experience and then when the economy picks up you can come back to the UK. An alternative would be to set aside most of the money but use the rest to set up a small busness. Whatever you do don't just fritter it away!! |

you should be entitled after one month 21k is all they will care about at first before they even consider that your a human being who paid taxes and NI contributions and now in need of assistence!
maybe consider getting a temperary job through an agency speak to some polish guy for advice about that!! and say nothing about your redundancy and severance pay invest it where the government cant find it. and then go sign on and get what they owe you for your hard work and tax paying skills... about 12 weeks or so later. |

You couldn't claim either benefits as you would need to be unemployed for at least 4wks and only have £6000 in savings. |

If you've got 21k in ya pocket you won't need or be entitled to benefits. Just enjoy some time off and make sure you hunt for a job.... |

no because they will expect you to live on what you have. and dont think they wouldnt find out because they can ask for bankstatements, p60/p45 employers notices all sorts of stuff like that |

you will be able to claim benefits after 8 weeks, and not before then, that is when you have to sign on,
go to your nearest job centre plus, and sign on.
and you will be able to get c/tax,benefit/ housing benefit.
you cannot claim until then. because you have been made voluntary redundant. |
