the tax is calculated on a monthly basis if you are paid monthly. whatever you earn each month, the system assumes you will earn that amount every month. it multiplies that amount by the remainder of months in the tax year and calculates your tax from that.
the amount you can earn before you reach your tax limit is approx £105.
this is correct for you but be aware that you may pay different amounts each month if your wages fluctuate.
hope this helps you

How much can you earn without paying tax and National Insurance?

Income Tax
Everyone can earn a certain amount each year without paying any Income Tax. This is called your Personal Allowance. In 2008-2009 the Personal Allowance is £5,435. Some people can earn a bit more before they start paying tax, if they're over 65, for example.

National Insurance
You can earn up to £105 a week (2008-2009) before you pay any NICs. This is known as the 'primary threshold'.

As long as you earn more than £90 a week (2008-2009) you can still build up your entitlement to a State Pension and certain other benefits. This is known as the 'lower earnings limit'.

The tax year starts on 6 April and runs until 5 April the following year.

Each year, you are allocated a tax free allowance. This is £6,035 for the 2008/09 tax year. Basically, this means you can earn £6,035 in the year without paying any tax on that amount. Anything over this amount and you will pay tax on anything over that - In other words, if you earned £10,000 in a year, you'd pay tax only on £3,965 rather than the whole amount.

With Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax, you are taxed based on the proportion of the year that has gone and the proportion of your tax allowance up to that point in the year compared to the tax you have paid up to that point. That may sound a bit confusing, but to explain a bit more clearly.

In the first month of the year, you have 1/12 of your tax free allowance available. This is £502.92 If you do not pay any tax in that month, this rolls over to the following month, giving you £1005.84 to play with. The following month, this would be £1508.76 etc.

We are now in September, so this would mean that there's 5 months worth of Tax allowance unused so you could earn £2514.60 without paying any tax this month. If you earned, for example, £2000, the other £514.60 would roll over to the next month, meaning you could earn £1017.52 without paying tax next month. If you earned another £2000 next month, you'd pay tax on £982.48 etc.

I hope that makes some sense.

If you are paid weekly, the same rules apply, but it's worked out in 52nds rather than 12ths.

You may have not paid income tax because of the personal allowance.
Is this a part time job earning less than £115 (ish) per week? In this case you fall beneath the level for which you get taxed. As such you wouldn't pay any tax. If you post further details I can edit my answer.

Yeah, im having the same sort of thing.
How old are you? i'm 17.

Hedge Witch
You don't need to do anything as long as your employer produces the payslips.
Maybe they haven't received their copy of your tax code yet - or maybe your pay isn't enough to pay tax.
Don't worry, it will sort itself out - although it would be a good idea not to spend all of this payment - put 1/4 of it aside against the day when the taxman wakes up so that you don't suddenly find yourself very skint one week!

Shonz
It depends on age and income. I didn't get taxed the past 2 years of work as I was under 18 and still in full time education - on minimum wage 8 hours a week. Now I am 18 and out of full time education, but still on minimum wage only working 16 hours a week - meaning i still don't get taxed or pay national insurance cause i earn too little. Also earn too much to be on benifits.

Firstly talk to your employer - they keep track of tax credits you should be on - a big chain will have head office do it. If that doesn't clear it up, go speak to citizens advice bureau - they can help with alot of stuff!!

Nikki
How old are you?

Coz if you're under 18 and in full time education, you shouldn''t be paying Tax anyway, coz its against the law...

If you're over 18 (regardless of education), you should be paying tax
