She's an old dear who lives miles away.
If I just paid it into my Bank would it go through?
I don't fancy trapzing all the way back to get it altered. I know that cheques have to be paid in within 6 months.
What do you think?

I went back and asked her to change it. She was very apologetic but I told her I should have checked it. Bit of a pain having to traipze all the way back, but at least I won't spend Christmas worrying over it. Thanks for all the answers. |

I'd give it a try. Most personal checks don't really expire. If the bank has a problem, they'll let you know. |

jed slade what on earth are you talking about? If he changed the 6 to an 8 that would make the date of the cheque December 2008 and would therefore be post-dated and would not be able to be cashed. Plus, it's illegal.
My advice is to just put it in the bank and hope for the best. |

My contract with NatWest clearly states that they will not accept cheques more than 6 months old.
Best bet is to mail her the cheque with a SAE addressed to yourself. |

Call the customer. Explain what has happened and get her permission to change the date on the check. If you are paranoid that she will argue about the check after it has been changed and cashed or deposited, have her send you a piece of paper giving you permission to change the date. Chances are, she was just not paying attention when she was writing the check. |

i would give it a try first, officially they are only valid 6 months but my bank told me recently with automated clearing they dont check the date . i queried some post dated cheques i hadgiven being put thru immediatley causing me to go overdrawn, they said they dont check any more so dont give post dated chqs unless u trust the person not to put them in till the date. i did it to save time sending them separately but they put them all in, cost me £75 but lucky the bank refunded me the money. |

Although my bank here in the states has refused to cash checks more than three months old they have let me deposit checks with all sorts of errors. Once I didn't sign and check at the grocery store and it went through! I would say just send it through or alter year and hope for the best. |

There is a myth that cheques cannot be honoured after 6 months have expired from their date.
This is wrong - if your/their bankers refuse to honour the cheque challenge them to tell you why!
You may have to convince them that the cheque is genuine and that their is a valid reason for the long/late presentation but they cannot refuse to honour it without a legally binding reason!

The bank SHOULD spot it, or at least they would in my day. Nowadays I have my doubts. Give it a try, if it's rejected you know what you have to do. You're right, it's 6 months, in English banking practice anyway.
(For Crispy, legally a cheque is valid for 6 years, but it is normal banking practice to decline a cheque over 6 months old. They are entitled to do this, it is within their discretion. Any bank is entitled to decline any instrument.) |

this cheque will bounce, and you will be charged. contact the customer and ask them to post you a new cheque, if you dont want to go back to them. dont pay it in, there is no point.
personal cheques have to be cashed within 6 months, after this they become invalid!!!!

No the cheque will not be accepted by your bank as cheques have a 3 month period on them to be banked. I should contact her & ask if you can rip that one up & her send you another, or simply return it to her with a 'nice' little letter explaining what has happened. |
