I AM GOING TO BE A FATHER IN THE END OF NOVEMBER. I AM WONDERING IF I SHOULD CLAIM MY CHILD AS A DEPENDENT NOW?
MY QUESTION IS THAT I MAKE MORE THAN MY WIFE. SHOULD SHE CLAIM OUR CHILD OR SHOULD I? WHO WILL GET MORE BACK WHEN FILING FOR TAXES?

If you file a joint return, you'll claim her together - that almost surely will give you the lowest tax bill total for the two of you. Your other option is to each file as married filing separately - that almost always costs you more total tax. If you file separately, you can choose who will claim the child, but it's probably the one who makes the most money.

You can change your W-4 now to claim her if you will be claiming her on your actual tax return, or will file a joint return.

You can not claim your unborn child as a dependant until it is actually born.

As long as the baby lived with you for the rest of the year. (Nov. and Dec.)
The baby would be a QC, so yes you can claim the child.

If you are filing MFJ -the credit will be given to the person with the higher AGI, because it will bring your taxable income down, and as an result owe less taxes, etc.

You cannot claim your child on your taxes until he/she is born. Being able to claim a dependent on a tax return is tied to a number of related tax benefits. Taxpayers who claim dependents can claim an additional personal exemption for each dependent. Also, taxpayers may be eligible to claim the child tax credit, the child and dependent care tax credit, and the earned income tax credit. Unmarried taxpayers who support a dependent may be eligible to file as head of household.
With all these tax benefits tied to claiming a dependent, it is important to make sure that you really can claim the dependent on your tax return.

If your wife didn't make the 3,000 qualification then I would say it is ∂ better idea for u to use the baby but if you both made the 3,000 then it doesn't matter because you both can get the rebate and get 300 for the child.

Once the baby is born you can use it as a dependent for that tax year. You file jointly with your wife then it isnt a matter of who claims it. If you file mfs you will lose some child deductions. IF you are talking about on the W4 for your job on how much is taken from your paycheck you can do it anytime.

What we do is not claim the kids.We put zero dependents then we get more back at tax time. It is worth it and also you will get money back for daycare too.

"Claiming" your child midyear on your W-4 will only affect how much is withheld from your taxes at this point. They must be born prior to the end of 2008, however, to be able to claim them on your 2008 tax return.

If you are married, you are most likely best off filing jointly...unless you make an incredibly higher amount than your wife, filing jointly is most likely the most beneficial. Unless you are unmarried or divorced, the IRS requires that the spouse with the higher AGI claims the child. However, this is not usually enforced, so whoever makes more will likely benefit more from claiming the child.
