TallPaul
If it has been your main residence for 6 months, then No, you won't have to pay Capital Gains Tax. I'm fairly sure that's how the system works...

Keep the thumbs down coming, ya f**ktards. And to the Yanks: LOOK AT WHAT SECTION THIS IS ASKED IN, THEN F**K OFF AND SPOUT YOUR IRRELEVENT AND WRONG ANSWER SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Foo
No as long as its your only house. People do not have to pay income tax on the sale of their only residence. However if it is a second house you will have to pay capital gains tax.

no you dont if its your main residence as no tax is due on sale of own home.

so you could of bought it for £1 and sell it for £100,000 and no tax will be due.

If it's your main residence, no. If it's not and you sell it for more than you paid for it, you pay capital gains tax on the profit. Following the Chancellor's autumn statement, the way capital gains tax is paid is likely to change from April.

It depends on whether you have lived in it or not. If it was what is termed as your "principal and private residence" (for UK tax purposes) then no. If however you developed the property and then sold it then yes. Give the Inland Revenue a call if in doubt. They've got loads of leaflets on this subject.

If this is not your main or principle residence then you will have to pay Capital Gains Tax (this is assuming you live in the uk). Speak to an accountant about this

If you live in the property then no Tax is payable.

troop there it is
no

Dragoner
Yup! There's a tax called Capital Gains Tax. Not sure how this is worked out exactly, but your local tax office can advise you.

If you are not sure where your local tax office is located, try your town hall, they usually have an office in there somewhere.

House prices are set to tumble by about 40% over the next couple of years. I'd get a move on if you plan to sell otherwise you may lose wonga!

Lori E
Yes, if it's an "arms length" sale.

organbuilder272
Not sure of UK if that is where you are at. In USA you must pay capital gains tax on the amount of difference between the buying and selling price if the selling price is more than the purchase price.. However, if you invest that money in another house within a specific time period, ther is no tax.

le_widowmaker
Not if it's your first house sale. You're covered up to $700k or so. If you put it right back into another house purchase, you're covered too.
