I LOVE tax time. Does anybody else?
Over the years I've come to love this time of the year. And it seems like each year it keeps getting better as far as returns. We are married, we paid taxes on two homes, and both of us are students. I can't wait until we have dependants! :D

#3 I get a big refund.
I knew someone would say that about not 'loaning the government' my money. But we mostly get big returns because of things like the Hope and Lifetime learning scholarships and the property taxes that we've paid.

There are only three possible reasons you would say that:

1. You are in the business of selling tax advice or doing returns for people (like a CPA for example).

2. You are just joking around and are being sarcastic.

3. You get a big refund check after doing your taxes. If this option describes you, then you're getting screwed and should not be happy about it. Essentially what is happening is your employer is witholding MORE taxes from each paycheck than they really need to. Those witholdings are turned over to the government where they get to earn free interest on your hard earned money whereas you would've been better off getting to keep that money in the first place and just putting it into a savings account where YOU would earn the interest (or pay down debt).

Solution: Increase the number of dependents on your W4 with your employer. You want it to work so each time of the year when you do taxes, you don't have to pay anything extra, but don't get a refund either.

I do. It is the time of year I get to pull money in and teach people how to make small changes in their financial lives to improve their future and then following up on their progress and celebrating their successes and helping them through their struggles.

Plus, people pay me to do something I love to do. What is not to love about that?

If your refund is due to deductions for mortgage interest and real estate tax, or from education credits, then you are loaning the government money. Deductions and education credits reduce taxes you owe.

It seems (if your question is taken at face value) that you believe the government is giving you money. That is not the case. The government is returning your money to you that you have overpaid.

No, it's a headache. I long for the day we have Fair Tax or Flat Tax. Having Federal sales tax would be great. Do the same with state tax and also let us pay for our own retirement (meaning not taking so much for SS). SS is a joke. My mother died at 53 this year and not only does her SS benefits go to waste, we couldn't even get the $255 death benefit. The government and their rinky-dink rules are a joke. It's not like SSI is even going to be guaranteed for any of us just because we pay for the Boomer's right now and not all the money goes to SS. That's why they hope you die before 65 so it's just less to have to pay out.

It would be much wiser if you changed your deductions so you are not loaning the government so much money throughout the year.

I only love it if I am getting a refund, otherwise I don't much like it.

ohhhh yeah!!!!!

its when i make the bulk of my income, then its easy street the rest of the year.....

I love tax time, as I am a preparer, and this is the time when I get the bulk of my income. Most low-income families will agree with you as well, as they collect on Earned Income Credit, but middle and higher class families will most likely not like this time, as it is painful to have it spelled out to you just how much the Federal government is taking from you each year just for working.
