See if the bank will still cash it and if not, take it back to your boss and tell him/her what happened and they can probably get you another one (although it may take a while). |

Inform your employer...they will contact the payroll company...and you will have to wait a few days for a new check (some even charge a small fee to re-print) |

A ripped check is still valid...the bank even rips them now and again. However, unlike a $20 bill where you just need the biggest half...you would have to have all of the pieces.

Just tape it together on the back and take it to the bank. They will probably still cash it. Just go up to the dumbest looking teller they have. Usually, there are several to pick from fitting that description at my bank. Try to engage the teller in conversation the entire time to distract him or her. |

As long as you have all the pieces, you can just scotch tape it back together. Use the tape on the front of the check, since the bank needs to use the back side for their stamps etc.
It is important that all the numbers at the bottom of the check (account number, routing number etc) are still clearly visible.
Sign the rear side as usual and deposit or cash it.
If some of the numbers are not visible, you will have to exchange it for a replacement check. As long as you are returning the ripped check, your employer should not give you a hard time.
My son ripped a check into about a dozen pieces, I taped it and deposited it. My bank had no problem with it.

Ask your manager or Human Resources to issue you a new one. While you're there, you can ask to get direct deposit on your checking account so this doesn't happen again! Direct deposit will put the money in your bank checking or savings account at midnight Friday so that you don't need to go to the bank and wait in lines or fuss about finding a piece of paper. It's convenient! |
