I am a carer and work in visiting peoples homes am i entitled to claim mileage from the inland revenue?
i use my own car and i dont recieve anything from my boss for my petrol

If you are an employee and your employer does not reimburse your work mileage, you can claim tax relief - not the actual cost of running your car. You can only claim for mileage between your office and the clients homes, not home to work.
The statutory rate is 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. You cannot claim depreciation, etc as a previous answerer has stated.
You just need to keep records of your work miles and write to HMRC at the end of the year to make your claim.

My Grain
You can only claim for tax allowance which is 20%,it's disgusting as you're not even paid for the time travel between clients. I'm a live-in carer, work 24/7 for a gross rate of £2-£2.50 per hour and as they pay private these days I have to pay another 8% of my wages to the NI on top of the normal contributions. The government have got around the minimum wage legally. Not that it'll do any good but I've sent off a petition to 10 Downing Street for Community Carers to be paid full petrol costs AND between clients.Waiting for it to be approved. The agencies that come in to help me are working often 70-90 hours per week to get by and they then wonder why there is such a shortage of carers!
Don't forget to try and get tax relief on mobile phones and clothing alowance also!

Perhaps you should have found that out when you took the job on. I done voluntary work meals on wheels i could claim a percentage. My sister was a carer & travelled to homes she never got any allowance, it doesnt seem fair to me i think you should get an allowance.

queendee321
ur employer should pay for ur internal travel time in work. it doesnt have to be car allowance though my employer pays my bus travel..

another point is that you are responsible for travel to first job and for getting home from last job,, check your contract also

ascoile
You can't claim for expenses to and from work. Therefore you can't claim from home to your first call and from your last call to home. You can claim for mileage in between.
You can also claim a proportion of servicing and repair costs for your car. In addition, you can calim 25% of the cars depreciation value ech year.
You should contact your local tax office to confirm these points and get them to explain to you how to claim.
