I am a model. I want pictures to help get jobs. Can I purchase a camera and write it off on taxes?

No since you're not a photographer. When in doubt, consult and accountant or IRS directly.

bostonianinmo
Not likely. Models don't take their own pictures, they have professional photographers do that for them. The cost of those photos is a legitimate tax deduction -- and probably a lot more than any camera would be

schneider2294@sbcglobal.net
Get it done professionally. This may be your career ambition and you have to do it right because modeling is a cut throat business and you have to take every advantage you possibly can, and then you can write of some of your expenses. I would talk to a tax consultant about any write offs or better yet get your own tax professional like I did.

If I was an IRS auditor and I came across a deduction for a camera on a tax return of a model what would I think?

Probably something like: "This person is a model, her work involves being on the other end of the camera rather than taking the actual pictures. So what is the BUSINESS PURPOSE for this person purchasing a camera? NONE - DEDUCTION DENIED!"

Bottom line you could put it on your tax return as an expense of doing business (most likely you'd take a depreciation or S. 179 deduction), and the chances are you'd never get audited. But if you did get audited, as a model, you'd find it hard to convince an IRS auditor that you had a legitimate business purpose for buying a camera.

Is this an Australian question?

If so, depends.

How much is the camera? I understand that this is a business related asset....

Are you considered running a small business modelling? and not just a hobby?

Generally being a business related asset it will need to be depreciated over a few years. But small businesses with income less than $2M can choose to write off depreciating assets < $1000 right away.

only if you actually get a modeling job, then you can claim it as a business expense.

You have to own a business to write things off on taxes as business expenses. Simply pursuing a dream is not sufficient enough for the IRS. Anyone that advises you otherwise is setting you up for the big ok-ee-doke

Brenda B
i agree.. it's a busines expense
just keep the receipt and manuels !

If you actually get any income. Keep the pictures of youself on a cd in case you get audited. Don't have any non modeling pictures on it if you get audited.
