B E | I am a part time employee and taxes aren't deducted from my paycheck, how do I file my taxes? |
I just moved to New York City and work a part time job. Every week my boss cuts me a check for my hours but he does not deduct tax from this. How do I figure out how much I am going to owe? This will be the first year I've ever filed for taxes so I am completely baffled here.
I'm fresh out of college and definatley on the low end of the tax bracket, in 2007 I would say I made around 10,000 so in 2007 so will I owe a lot in taxes?
Thanks! |

Your boss is required to give you a 1099. It's a form that shows all the money he's paid you without taking the taxes out. Take that to your accountant or tax preparer and they'll take it from there. |

You'll need to fill out a 1040 based on your 1099, which your employer will give you. You can get the 1040 at the library.
I'm not sure how much you'll owe. It will depends on so many variables. |

the tax form has a chart in the back and depending on when you started and total income you may not owe any tax for 2007 you just need to fill out the form. i reccomend turbo tax basic for you. but living in nyc I know there is a city tax for the state form so you may owe some. good luck if you have any questions email me at taustin288@yahoo.com |

If you made around $10K, and NO taxes were taken out, your tax bill when you file will be a little over $1500, not a lot in the grand scheme of things but probably a lot to someone living in NYC on that low of an income.
You'll have to fill out a schedule C or C-EZ, a schedule SE, and a form 1040 when you file your taxes. Your boss might or might not give you a form called a 1099 for what you were paid - if he doesn't, you'll have to calculate it from your own records so keep good ones.
And by the way, depending on what your job is and how much control your boss has of how, when and where you do your work, you are probably being misclassified, and should be classified as an employee - he's avoiding paying payroll taxes for your wages, shoving some of them off on you and others just aren't paid - for example you aren't covered for workers comp if you get hurt on the job, or for unemployment comp if you get laid off. You'll pay almost twice as much for social security and medicare. |

You should be paying about 800 in quarterly tax payments. Search the IRS website for instructions on how to do this.

probably not owing too much, but it depends on how much you made an hour, but you will owe money because you didn't have any taxes taken out. you should start paying them quarterly jan 1- march 31; april 1- may 31; june 1- aug 31; sept 1- dec 31. and take out at least 25-30% from your paychecks. then you should get a nice refund the next year!!! |

Go to the library or post office and get a 1040 booklet. It should explain it in there. |

Are you being abused by your employer? Part time doesn't matter.
Some employers try to get around paying employment taxes (social security and unemployment) and other employee benefits like workers compensation insurance by improperly classifying employees as independent contractors. The basic issue is the amount of control the employer has over the worker. If you are required to show up for work--personally--at a particular time, punch the clock, use the employer’s equipment and are paid an hourly rate, or another set rate based on time served, you are an employee. If you didn't understand the difference when you posed your question, I would be even more convinced that you are an employee. What is your preference, Slotted or Phillips? Complete an IRS Form SS-8 to get an official ruling on your status. This will help you get unemployment if you get fired. When you file your income tax return, you can attach Form 8919 Uncollected Social Security and Medicare Tax on Wages and only pay the employee's half of social security. You will still have to cough up all the income tax. IRS and the states are stepping up enforcement in this abuse area. |

If you're 1099'd you'll be paying that part of the tax. |
