Miss RoZy
Yes but you should get a 25 per cent discount if you the only person over 18 years living at the address.
Good on you for getting out there and building a better life for you and your child and not sitting about letting the state keep you. I was in same position as you when my son was younger. I worked evenings and nights and was at college during the day. You will reep the benefets eventually.

If you are entitled to housing benefit - no. If you`re not entitled to housing benefit - yes.
Why don`t you work 18 hours and claim family tax credits ....?

dolly dewdrop
i'm a full time student 16 hours and the council told me you have to be in college for more than 21 hours to qualify as full time. you will get a rebate if you are the only adult in the household 25%

As a student you are entitled to a reduction off your Council Tax and rent as well. Go to Student Services in the college you are with and they will give you the proof you need to take to the council.
Unless you are on income support then you will be exempt from paying council tax.

if you work 16 hours or more you do but if you work less then 16 hours you will be entitled for it to be reduced and will get more tax credits and have to pay less rent, unless you are in a really good paid job you should work less then 16 hours.

You need to go to your local council tax office and fill in the benefit claims form.

Yes of course you should, like everyone else who has to.

Beast from the East
No, students are exempt from council tax

miss_blue_47
Full-time students don't have to pay council tax. Your university should give you a letter confirming your status; forward a copy of this to your local council.

I don't think the fact that you're working part time affects it - I worked when I was a student and still didn't have to pay. Even if your council say you do, you would be eligible for a discount if it's just you and your child(ren) - provided they are under 18 or in full-time education.

Ring your council to be sure - you can go to prison for not paying Council Tax!

SALSA
Unfortunately Yes. Council doesn't care, they just want their due. They will cut slack for no one.
