You will only have to pay tax if you earn more than £6,035 in the tax year (6 April 2008 to 5 April 2009). This works out as £116 a week, or £503 a month. The tax code and the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system spread any tax due across the year as evenly as possible. In this way, if you work throughout the year, you will pay the right amount of tax. If you give up work part way through the year, a refund may be due.

It's a common misconception that because they are in full time education, students don't have to pay tax. That is not the case. There is no tax exemption for students, even those at school.

The misconception arises as few students earn enough to be taxed. Currently you have to earn more than £6,035 in a tax year (April - March) to be above the threshold for paying tax. Thus most part time student jobs fall under this amount.

This won't be the case if you work full time. You are probably being taxed correctly, however if you have any doubts use one of the websites which calculate how much tax you should be paying, ie: listentotaxman.com.

Sorry that it is bad news!
