I am being audited by the IRS for the year 2006. I have a retired IRS employee who does tax returns on the?
side, and I pay her. The IRS says some income was not reported and now I owe $815. Who is responsible to pay this money? Me or the paid tax preparer?

wartz
The taxpayer is responsible for paying what is due. If some income was not reported, you probably did not disclose it to the preparer.

Wayne Z
You are.

Regardless of who does your tax return, you are responsible for any tax liability.

You can ask your preparer to pay the penalties and interest and they MIGHT do that but they are not under any requirement to do so.

Judy1
You are responsible to pay the extra tax.

bostonianinmo
The taxpayer is solely and exclusively responsible for the accuracy of the tax return filed. This includes if the paid preparer was negligent in the preparation of the return.

Your liability for the tax and any and all penalties and interest is absolute. That said, many paid preparers will cover the penalties and some will cover the interest if the error is theirs. They are under no legal obligation to do so, however. And also bear in mind that if they do, those amounts are treated as taxable INCOME to you in the year in which the preparer reimburses you for those costs.

Charles G
You are responsible to pay your taxes.

The IRS computers said that you left income off of your tax return. If you forgot to take a W-2 to your preparer, how is it his fault in any way that it wasn't on the tax return?

Ms. Angel..

sorry you won't like this answer, but you are responsible for the underreported income. whomever does your tax return has nothing to do with it they are filing your tax return with the information you provided them, how are they to do that you withheld a w2. It isn't an audit it is a CP2000 you received which is for "underreported income"..
contact the phone number listed if you don't understand the letter on how to correct "your" underreported income.

travelguruette
You sign your return so you are ultimately responsible. You knew the income was not reported.
