I am claiming exempt for the last 3 months of the year. Can I do that? I normally get $3 grand back in refunds?

You can claim exempt for the whole year if you want to, as long as you file your taxes each year and pay the IRS what you owe them.

You can't legally claim exempt if you expect to have ANY tax liability (not get back everything that was withheld) or if you had any tax liability last year. But if you have already paid in more than you'll owe for the year, you can legally increase your allowances to where they don't take anything more out. Just don't forget to change it back at the end of the year, or you'll have real problems next year.

No, you can't. You are NOT exempt, and it is illegal to claim that you are if you aren't.

What you *can* do is change your W-4 to a higher number of exemptions, which means that your employer will withhold less from each paycheck and give you more to bring home. Then at the beginning of next year, you can adjust your W-4 again so that you are having the appropriate amount withheld each week.

If you think that you will not owe any taxes when you file your tax return, then you can increase allowances on your W4.

You can't claim an exemption if you provided less than 50% of the expenses in the calendar year.

If you claim exempt on your paychecks it will only lower your refund. Dont do it more than 3 months. When I worked for the DMV they let us do that but no more than three months.

The only filing that you can file exempt from are Federal and State taxes. The person above is not correct. You cannot exempt yourself from social security, etc
