If you take a standard deduction then no, you can NOT write off your mortgage interest.

What you need to do is file as Head of household so you get taxed less and then itemize your deductions in order to write off your mortgage interest on the schedule A.

Just make sure your total itemized deductions are more than the standard deduction which is 7850 for HoH. If they are not more than the standard deduction then do not itemize your deductions.

No, if you look at the tax form you have a choice of either choosing standard deduction, or itemized deduction!!!

bostonianinmo
No. You may itemize or claim the standard deduction, not both.

Eric
Nope, mortgage interest is usually the first thing that pushes people to itemize... spring for some tax software and itemize... you should do better than the standard deduction.

You can only do one or the other.

You can either claim the standard deduction or you can itemize...not both.

You have the choice to either take the standard deduction ($7850 for head of household) OR itemize your deductions. You chose which is higher for you to take. When itemizing, you can claim your mortgage interest and qualified mortgage insurance premiums, possibly medical & dental expenses (the amount is based on your income), state income taxes withheld from your paycheck, annual real estate taxes, an gifts to charity, to name a few. Look at Schedule A and see if your itemized deductions add up to over $7850, if so, go that route.

I am not for sure, but if you are claiming the standard deduction then I don't believe you can claim both. I think you have to be itemizing in order to do so. Good luck.

No, you can claim itemized deductions OR the standard deduction, whichever is more, but can't claim both.

If you are itemizing your deductions you can. You can claim your property taxes as well.

Yes, as long as nobody else is claiming it.
