Yes, if you earn above your tax-free allowance.

Edit

Your employer has to deduct tax according to the PAYE formula. If you haven't filled in a P46 you will be taxed at basic rate. You will eventually hear from the Inland Revenue and may be due for a tax refund if too much tax has been deducted. That will all be done through your payslip.

You don't say if this is your first job. Or your first job this tax year (April - March).

Chances are that they have used either the Emergency Tax Code or the Basic Rate code. Were you able to give them either a P45 or a notice from your tax office as to your Tax Code?

If you are in full time eduction, is this a holiday only job? If its a job you only do in the holidays there is a form P38 specially for Students. The onus is on you to provide this completed form to your employer.

However if its a job that you do such as at weekends and during the holidays then you need to get a tax code sent to your employer, from your local tax office. You can either write to your local tax office or ask your employer to request a tax code.

When your new tax code is sent, then whatever you have paid in tax so far will probably be refunded in your next paypacket. It usually works itself out as your employer will be using a Salary computer package which is programmed with the correct formulae for doing exactly this.

If you don't feel that the correct deductions have been made you can query it either with your employer, or make an appointment with your local tax office. They are very helpful.

National Insurance is payable by everyone over 16, when you hit a certain level of earnings. Unfortunately this cannot be claimed back.

As the others have said you have to pay tax on any earnings above £5225. Your tax code should be 522L, it should be on your payslip. If it isn't then contact your local inland revenue service to see why it is not and can it be changed. If you are earning less than £100 per week gross you should not be paying tax.

Yes, i think everyone, regardless of their age, pays tax based on what they earn.

Only if you earn more than £5225 in the current tax year.

You will be taxed until you get a tax certificate number, then if you income is low it will all be refunded.
Go to your local DHSS offices and they will supply the forms and all info you need

Meeeee!

Tax on what?

Do you own or rent a property? Do you have income over £5K per annum?

I guess you pay VAT on stuff you buy.
