I am... so lost (tax related)?
I'm 21. I've never had a job ('til last year) that paid enough to make me file taxes...

...Then I got married in late 2005, me and the husband did it together last year but I don't really -remember- any of it. We did it at H&R.

...Now he's deployed and I'm so lost looking at this stuff, it makes my head explode.

All they tell me is to bring in what the little 'tax document checklist' thing tells me. I don't know what half of this stuff is. What is 'proof' of charitable donations? I have no clue where our tax return is from last year, but it says they should already have that (I hope..)

I know SSN's at least.

How do you calculate 'state and local' income tax? How do you do ANY of this stuff? I have no idea. =( Please, somebody help.

Note: I already asked my parents. They more or less nicely told me to figure it out on my own.

I love you guys! =)

Proof of charitable donations - if you contributed to a church or other recognized charitable organization, you should have gotten a receipt - take it in, although it might or might not help you.

Tax return from last year is helpful but not totally necessary. If you can find it, take it in.

For ssn's they'll want either the cards or a copy of them. If you have last year's return they'll probably take them from there.

State and local tax is on the W-2's, so you're covered there.

If you own a house you'll get a statement from the lender - take that in, and anything else that shows up in your mailbox in the next month or so marked "Tax Document" or something like that, on the envelope.

If you don't own a house, the charitable donation receipts aren't likely to make any difference. You have a choice of "itemizing", which means listing all of your deductions, or taking what's called a standard deduction which is an amount they just let you take with no list and no receipts - for a married couple filing jointly that's $10,700 this year.

Good luck. Post again, or feel free to email, if you have more questions.

Ah yes - the joy of filing taxes. Here's where to start - by the end of January, you should receive your W-2 from your employer and have your husband send you his W-2 (that is if it is not mailed to your house). You'll need those two documents to file your tax return.

For charities, if you gave more than $250 to any one charity, you will need documentation showing what you gave them. For example - tithes for churhes, my former church would send each member a statement showing how much they gave to the church in tithes and offerings.

The information about how much you gave for state income taxes is also found on your W-2. I live in TN, which doesn't have a state income tax. I don't know where you live, but not every state has a state income tax. Be sure to check your W-2 to see if this information is on it.

I'd also suggest since you aren't really comfortable doing your own taxes, take your information back to the H&R Block you used last year. They should still have your information in their computer system.

If you want to do it yourself, you can use TaxAct - www.taxact.com. I've used them the past 2 years in filing my returns and it pretty much walks you through everything. It prompts you to enter information from your W-2, etc.

Also - if you have a child and pay for childcare, you'll need a statement from your childcare provider showing how much you paid in expenses, if you have own your home - you'll need a statement from the lending company showing what you paid in interest the previous year.

Filing tax returns isn't as hard as some people make it out to be. It's a lot of reading, but it's really not that hard. I've done my own taxes since I was 19 years old. Don't let the information overwhelm you. The best way to learn to do it, is to sit down with your W-2 and on a scratch/extra form, just fill in the information. Each line walks you through to the next one.

Good luck!

you really can do it all on your own.

H & R and the rest just rip you off.

but if you really have no clue and dont want to take the time to study this...just go to a mom and pop tax place and ask them what you need. most will help that much for free.

Proof of charitable deductions would be any receipt you got for donations, like to Goodwill, or cash you sent to a tax-deductible organization.

You can request a copy of last year's tax return from the IRS:
http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html

You can get free tax help from VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance); give them a call at 1-800-829-1040.

Your parents sound like smart people.

I suggest you go to the government websites (like www.irs.gov) and start printing out instructions and forms.

For federal taxes, just start with the basic 1040, and read the instructions. It may tell you that you can drop down to the 1040-EZ, it may not. Just follow the instructions, step-by-step.

Same deal for state taxes.

If there is a military facility near you, contact them and ask if they have any free tax assistance for servicemen. Many do, and they would also be familiar with any special provisions for the military.
Second choice would be H&R, since they should have your info on file.
Wait until mid February, and bring in any mail you receive that says "Important Tax Information".
