Gambling losses are an itemized deduction but you can only deduct an amount up to your winnings.
The spot for the deduction is on Schedule A. |

If you have no winnings, then you cannot deduct losses. Losses can only be used to offset winnings. |

You can only deduct gambling losses up to the amount of your gambling winnings reported for that same year. There are a number of other requirements to deduct the losses - you have to have a log for the year, with all IRS required information, for ALL of your gambling activity for the year. If you are eligible to deduct gambling losses, they're a miscellaneous deduction on schedule A. If you don't itemize, you can't deduct them. |

Unless you're a professional gambler and report to the IRS as such, you can only deduct losses to offset winnings.
Hope this helps |

you can not write off gambling losses with out gambling winnings.... you do need documentation of your loss as well. you can report your loss on a sch a , but only if you itemize and all your misc deductions would have to be greater then 2% of your income |

You can write off gamling losses on Schedule A only to the amount of gamling winnings. The winnings will end up on Line 21 of your 1040. The losses will end up on Line 28 of your Sch A, and ARE NOT limted by 2% of your AGI as suggested. If you're using Turbo tax check in the deductions area - look for sometime like "other misc deductions" or "other deductions" - you should get to a question asking you if you have any other deductions not subject to the 2% limitation. That's where you'll put it so it ends up in the right place on your Sch A. Don't forget to view your forms to make sure it's in the right place. |
