I believe I was overcharged for my tax return-Who do I contact??

when and how
no such thing as overcharged. they can charge what ever they want. If you were mis-charged, then talk with whoever did your taxes

kunjaldp
You are the one who prepares the tax return or your accountant. If you are talking about W4 then you can get refund for overpayment through filing tax return.

Depending on your state there may be noone you can contact other than the better business bureau. If the person that prepared it was a cpa then you can go to the Board of Accountancy and report them for unethical practices. If they were not a CPA then other than the BBB you really don't have recorse. Either way... overcharging isn't something you can fight to get back if you signed a letter of engagement. You could try and take them to civil court but then you would have to prove that there was gross misconduct on their part that cost you money and you could claim damages. If you think there is something wrong with it have a CPA go over it and amend the return, then you may have something to take them to court over.

Something to keep in mind though... tax preparation is not cheap. Most firms have a minimum... as high as $100.00 and even a very simple return such as only a Schedule A would start at $150-$165. Schedule C is a heck of alot pricier if there is complilation required... our firm starts those at $200.00

Contact the IRS first. Go to irs.gov for the contact information.

If the IRS doesn't agree with you and you believe you've been wronged, find a tax attorney.

How about this? I went to my CPA on March 11. Paid him $300.00 dollars. I signed the paperwork in his office. He told me that we had just efiled my tax return. like we have done for the past 8 yrs. He sends me a bill for 120.00 more about a week and a half later. I have always paid my balance due when I received my tax return. Well, after 3 weeks and NOT receiving my refund. I called the IRS on Monday April 4, no record of my tax return being filed. After 3 phone calls to my CPA's office, I was told that no returns would be filed until all the balance is paid, new policy this year. NOONE told me this and I have paperwork form HIS office dated March 14 that the tax return had been filed.
