I bought my house in 2006 June, can I still claim interest paid?

Additional Details
Can I combine the interest paid and property taxes from 2006 with 2007 interest paid and property taxes, if I did not claim 2006?

You may have to do an amended 2006 tax return. I would ask a tax specialist but common sense tells me if you have the paperwork just refile.

Yes, if you have enough itemized deductions to itemize.

You can claim the mortgage interest you paid during 2007 on this year's tax return.

If you bought the house in June '06 you were eligible to claim 6 mos interest for 2006 return. For '07 you should have mortgage interest expense for all 12 mos.

You should file Schedule A on the regular IRS 1040 form. It has lines for mortgage interest as well as property taxes and other expenses that are deductible. Interest and taxes are deductible for each year you pay them, however, they have to be paid in the filing year you are filing. Example is that if you paid interest and taxes in the year 2007, they can only be claimed for the year 2007 on the 2007 forms. The 2006 interest and taxes should have been claimed on the 2006 forms. The other thing is that they are only able to be claimed if the total on Schedule A is higher than the Standard Deduction that everyone can claim. If the total on Schedule A is lower than the Standard Deduction, then you claim the Standard Deduction, which would be better anyway. If you have more questions, call the IRS toll free number 1-800-829-1040 and they will give you the answers you need after you get through the automated answer and get directed to the right department. The wait is usually 5 minutes or less right now.. It is better to find out from them than to claim something and they then say no, causing you a possible audit.

Sure, as long as you are paying it. Property tax too.

twokraftee
Of course. You can claim the interest till you pay off the loan. Each year your mortgage company will send you a 1098 which shows how much you paid in mortgage interest. Also dont forget to deduct the property taxes.
