ckuesper | I built a website for charity. Can I claim any deductions in my taxes? |
I run a small business where I build and maintain websites for $1200-1500. A friend of mine who does Christian motivational and strength shows asked me to build a website for him. I decided to do it for him for no charge since he's doing it as a non-profit. After working on my taxes, I wondered if I could claim the labor cost as a deduction. Can I? If so, how much? Where would I mark it down?
Thanks. |

You cannot claim labor work you do for charity. You can claim any expenses you had for doing the work |

No, you can't claim the labor cost - you can never claim the value of your time as a deduction. If you had any out of pocket expenses, you could claim those as a charitable contribution if the organization is a registered 501(c)3 charity, and if you itemize. |

NOPE, no labor costs.
You may deduct your out of pocket expenses. . . .
and, only if you itemize. . . .
So your reward may be in heaven! |

No, you cannot deduct your labor charges, on a couple of grounds. First, time donated does not carry a monetary value for deduction purposes. Only actual expenditures qualify. Second, unless your friend is a registered charitable organization, nothing qualifies as a charitable deduction, even if you spent actual cash doing what you did. |

You can NEVER claim the value of your labor as a deduction.
If you have any out-of-pocket costs directly attributable to desiging the website you may deduct those if you can prove them AND if it is for a registered 501(c)3 charity AND if you itemize your deductions. If it's not for a registered charity, no deduction at all is allowed, and if you don't itemize no deduction is possible. |

no income from your labor, so no deduction |

you would probably need to work out with the friend a donation of your time and find an amount to deduct but i dont see why not, after all it was a donation
you would probably want to do it like this, write him a bill, and use it as a write off though not so much as a charitable donation |
