I can't afford my income taxes?
I normally get a refund of about $800 every year from the government. This year, I made only about $1,000 more than I did the previous year and for some reason, I owe over $2,000 this year!!! I have no idea what happened. The only thing that changed is that I got married. Not realizing I would OWE the government money, I am not prepared to pay. Can I make payments on what I owe?
Additional Details
I did it married filing jointly and married filing separate and I owe either way.

You can file for an extension, but if you think you owe money, you'd have to pay it now and then file the actual paperwork later.

Contact someone at the IRS and talk about a payment plan. Be aware that they will probably charge you outrageous interest, so it's in your best interests to pay this as quickly as possible.

Change your deductions for this year so that you don't end up owing more again next year.

BTW - You weren't getting $800 from the government. You overpaid a bill and got a refund. It's YOUR money, not the government's.

You can feel out a payment plan agreement, but they will charge you interest and penalties. The quicker you get it paid the better. When you got married, your income together put you in a higher tax bracket. Make sure you change your withholding at work so you won't owe next year.

Yes, you can set up a payment plan with the IRS. You will need to contact them and get things set up before the filing deadline on the 17th.

Did you and your new husband file, MFJ?

Yes, the IRS will usually set up a payment plan with you.

good luck

Reminder: When you file an extension, it is only an extension on the time to file, not to pay what you owe! I have been in taxes many moons, and it is always best to file when you owe, even if you are unable to send in the entire balance. When you file an extension you really must send in an aprox. of what you owe.

Double check your return. Did you two file married filing joint (MFJ)? You say "I owe". That indicates to me that you are filing separate or still as single.

If you have not prepared the return MFJ, try it. It may produce a better result.

If you are able to, I suggest you pay the balance in full on a credit card to avoid interest and penalties from the government. This happened to me before and that is what I did, the interest rate on my credit was way lower than what the IRS would have charged. But only use this option if you are able to..don't go over your credit limit or anything.

The IRS is always willing to work with you if you can't pay all at once. Contact them and show them you are willing to make payment arrangements. Curious, do you have any dependants? Did you file MFJ this year? Slight changes can throw you into a different tax bracket. I always tell my customers to look for those hidden deductions they don't think they can take, especially if they are going to owe.

hightechchic
Yes, you can make payments if you make arrangements with them to do so.

They will still assess penalties and interest, though -- so pay it off as quickly as you possibly can. And do NOT miss a scheduled payment or they'll start coming after you for the whole amount again, plus even more penalties.

You should consult that with a lawyer

No one would have such worries under a national sales tax, no deductions, no nothing. It might cost you 25% of what you buy, be it bread or a learjet.

People complain that this would be regressive, but do you think the current system isn't? Except for lawyers, that is.

It might also make you aware of what idiotic foreign ventures are actually costing you, so no administration will support it.

buzyb
file for an extension-but do it before april 15th!

First realize that you may not have changed, BUT the govmt changes constantly and yes you should be able to make arrangements, contact your local IRS office should you desire to interact with them. I would suggest you get a movie called America; Freedom to Facism afterwards and view it. It might give you some thoughts for next year.

mtgguy
Go to another account and get a 2nd opinion.

zipps86
Just rip up all the papers that you receive from the IRS. All your problems will be solved that way.
