Breanna S | I commute to work 26 miles each way (40 minutes)--is that deductible for tax purposes? |
I'm a teacher and I got the job right before school started, leaving me not much time to look for a new apt or cancel my current lease. So I stayed where I'm at but it's 26 miles away and 40 minutes drive each way. Is it possible to deduct money for taxes spent on gas or the crazy miles I'm going over on my car's lease for sole business purposes?? (I honestly don't use the car to go anywhere else except a mile or two down the road to the grocery store or friends'.) If I can, what form would I use?
Thanks! |

No, you can't write off those miles to and from work. But, if you have a second job, you can write off the miles from your first to the second job. Also, you said you were a teacher. If you have to drive to classes or meetings, you CAN write off those miles as long as you drive to work first. If you write off the miles it would go on a 2106 and you would have to itemize. It would go under work related expenses. Also, anything you buy for your classroom or school related would go on that to deduct. |

Those are not business miles my dear. They are employement transportation and unless you work two jobs, or, you get paid on a 1099 as an independant contractor (kinda doubt it) they are NOT |
