SilverFoxx | I did not file my taxes for 2005, what will happen.? |
I was on deployment all through tax filing season of 2005 and totally forgot to file my taxes. I usually get about 400 to 500 dollars back every year so its not like I owed any money to the IRS. Just curious as to what happens and how to go about correcting it the proper way. |

If you are entitled to a refund you will get it only if you file your 2005 return before next April 15 |

File the return as soon as you can. If you don't owe anything, there won't be a problem. But the returns filed in 2005 were for tax year 2004 and it's too late now to get a refund if you had one coming. |

As long as you don't owe any money, the IRS won't care.

I forgot to file one year a long time ago. Like you, I would have received a refund. A couple years later they sent me a letter asking "what's up with that?" I still had my W-2 so I sent them that and a letter explaining that I just overlooked it and could they please figure out any penalties I might owe and let me know what to do next. They sent me the refund I would have gotten plus interest. The next year I had to pay taxes on the interest (it was pocket change). They explained it all in a letter with my refund. You're definitely better off if you forget to file when THEY owe YOU money. Then they know you're not trying to rip them off. |

File your 2005 tax return. If you have a refund, you will not pay any interest or penalty. To get the refund, you must file on or before April 15, 2009. After that you will not get refund.
If you do not file, the IRS and state can ask to to file tax return even after a few years; then you will not get your refund and if IRS figures out any tax due, you must pay it with interest and penalty.

File ASAP. You might still get something back. |

Its a good idea for you to file at this time, before IRS files for you. You have until 04152009 to claim your refund.
Haven't Filed an Income Tax Return? Here's What to Do
Filing a past due return may not be as difficult as you think. Taxpayers should file all tax returns that are due, regardless of whether or not full payment can be made with the return. Depending on an individual’s circumstances, a taxpayer filing late may qualify for a payment plan. All payment plans require continued compliance with all filing and payment responsibilities after the plan is approved. However, full payment of taxes saves you money.
