LaVerito | I did not make any taxable income, do I still need to file taxes? |
Honestly, I had never filed taxes until last year. The IRS send me a letter asking me for my 2006 filing, but I didnt file. Honestly, I still lived at home, was right out of college and helping in the house. I helped with the family business, and simply got a some cash on the side. What should I do? |

If you are single and earn under $8750 world wide income from all sources you are not required to file under most circumstances.
If you are a dependent of somebody else then there are different rules. A dependent must file a return if all income is earned and is more than $5350 or if your income is unearned (stocks, interest) then a dependent must file if unearned income is $850 or more.
There are exceptions where a person would be required to file regardless of income.
My suggestion is to file. If they sent you a letter asking you to file, then file. Income is reported to the government. If they are sending you a letter, there is probably something reported and they believe you should file.
Call 1800-829-1040 (the irs) and ask for a transcript of your account to be mailed to you for the year in question. You will need to know your social security number when you call. This will tell you what has been reported in your social security number as income. You can call your state taxing agency and ask them for the same thing. |

Oh,geez, things were going along fine until you mentioned that "cash on the side". You do realize that's taxable income, and if you made over $400 "on the side" in a year, you are required to file and pay tax on it?
Legally, you need to go back and file a return for any year where your "cash on the side" was over $400. If you are getting cash "on the side", "off the books", or "under the table", all of which basically mean the same thing, and you don't report it, you are illegally evading taxes. |

The IRS does not just ask someone to file taxes. They must have a report of you receiving income (1099, W-2) and enough income to indicate that you are likely to owe taxes.
File your taxes, making sure to claim all your income. Or the IRS will file for you, not to your advantage. |

If the IRS requests a tax return for 2006, provide them with one. The cash payments you received would go on Schedule C.
Kind of sounds like someone reported you, or your family business was audited. |

If the IRS is asking you to file a return it is because taxable income was reported to them. Call the phone number listed on the letter and find out what was reported under your social security, the phone operator will send you a wage information transcript, and will also explain why you are required to file. |

i think you have to make so much before you have to file a tax return. it use to be $600.00 but i don,t know what it is now. |

Just tell the IRS you had no income.
Maybe you filed in prior years and they thought you had failed to file.
I sometimes tell someone who retires and has very little income, to file one last return which shows they do not earn enough to file.
You could also file a return showing zero income. That would probably be less trouble than trying to explain it. |

Speak with a tax accountant. He will ask the correct questions, and by your answers be able to advise you. |

Last year was calendar year 2007. Taxes filed by April 15 of that year is for income earned in 2006. So, your first statement contradicts your second statement. Taxes for 2007 were to be filed by April 2008.
That cash on the side you earned may have been reported to the IRS by your dad or whoever ran the family business.
Get your W2 and any copies of your 1040 series forms. Give them a call to see what they want or when they want to see you. |

I suggest you do.
With the IRS, I try to side with caution.
So file your info, and that should content them.
Good luck! |

No, if you do not make any reportable income (meaning a corporation issues you a W-2 or 1099) you do not have to file. Now there are exceptions for lottery and gambling winnings but I think it has to be over $400 for you to be required to report to the IRS. |

You need to file taxes every year,no matter if you make money or lose money, the IRS wants to know what you are doing. You had better get all your ducks in a row,do your taxes and send them in,the IRS will put you in the clink for not filing and or fine you unbelievable amounts. |
