I didn't file my taxes last year. What do I do?
I worked part-time in 2005, earning about $3000. I foolishly didn't file my taxes. What is the best way to make amends? Can I just use last year's W2 in conjunction with this year's filing, or do I have to file separately?

Neither, if it was all from a W-2 type of job. $3000 was under the limit where you were required to file, so you can just forget about it and quit worrying. If you had anything withheld though for federal income tax, you might as well file and you'll get it refunded to you - to do that, go to irs.gov and print off the 1040EZ form for 2005 and fill it out and mail it in.

If more than $400 of your income last year was from self-employment, it gets a little more complicated, and you'd be required to file and should probably see a professional to prepare the return for you. But if it was all on a W-2, you're OK and don't need to do anything for last year.

You should not under any circumstances combine last year with this year and file it all this year.

Good luck.

You'll have to file it separately using the 2005 forms. You can get them at the IRS website. You don't have any tax liability with only $3,000 in income (the 2005 cutoff, I believe) and only need to file if you had income tax withheld and want to get that refunded.

Depending on how old you are, with that low of an income, you may have been eligible for the Earned Income Credit. File you taxes and youll at least get back any you paid in. Any extra you are invited to send my way. Sure cant wait to get it. Thanks.

You have to prepare your taxes separately...

You can ask for a 1040 X for last year and file just as you would have. With only $3,000 last year, I would guess that you owe no taxes any how, in which case you would not be required to file. But, just to be on the same side, investigate.
