I didn't work in 2007; but what (if anything) can I qualify for?
I'm a full time college student receiving financial aid, student loans and child support. I have one dependent. I know I don't qualify for the child tax credit or the earned income credit, but people are still telling me to file! I can't imagine what for! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you are using any of your scholarships or grants, including Pell grants, to pay for room and board, or other living expenses, this is considered taxable income to you. You may receive a w-2 if a grant is designated for non-qualified expenses. The w-2 may show federal withholdings, and you should file a return in that case. Even if you don't receive a w-2, you are required to file if your taxable income exceeds the threshold for your filing status.

IRS Publication 970 reviews the rules to determine if scholarship or grant money is considered taxable income.
IRS Publication 17 Part One (beginning page 5) reviews the rules regarding filing requirements.

As others have said, it is good to file a tax return, even if not required to file, if you wish to show consistency in your tax record. This might be helpful to you when applying for future financial aid, loans, and assistance.

Good luck.

You can't get a refund without having income.

If you have no income, there is no reason to file.

No, if you don't have any earned income for the year, you don't qualify for any tax credits. A lot of people don't know that. There's no reason to file and nothing to be gained by filing unless you are required to because you have some kind of reportable income.

Good luck in school.

No income = no refund.

There's nothing to file for.

Your friends are nuts. Your instincts were correct.

To obtain financial aid, loans, insurance, etc., it is sometimes necessary to provide a copy of your tax return. It may be worthwhile to fill out the form so that you have it available when private entities (school, insurance, banks, etc.) request it.

Worst case - it's a good opportunity to do a detailed review of your finances, even if you don't submit your return.

Child support is not taxable, but alimony is. If you received alimony as part of your payments, you have to claim it.

You may need a completed 1040 for financial aid purposes, so you should at least fill it out and keep it.

I encourage you to apply for additional aid - food stamps, etc. It sounds like you are going to be paying into the system once you get your feet on the ground. Personally, I'd rather see my tax dollars go to someone like you that's working on it than someone else who is just looking for a hand out. Do it for your child. And take care of yourself so you can take care of your child.

Life will get better soon. You will get through this.

I would still file just to get it on record. You don't want the fed's to think your not reporting, that would throw up red flags. If you only have zero's to put on your sheet, then zero's it is.

Otherwise, contact H&R Block and ask them their opinion
