I do childcare for someone and they want to use the monies paid on childcare, do I have to give them my SS#?
The people I do child care for wants my EIN or my Social Security number, to use to show that they paid me on there taxes, Im not comfortable giving them my SS#, Is there any other thing I can gice them.

The IRS does ask them to provide your tax ID number, which would be your social security number.

You'll then need to report your income on Schedule C so that it can be properly assessed for Income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes. This is WHY they want the SSN reported.

You can refuse to provide your social security number, and then they will write "Refused" on the form, but if you do that, you may be subjecting yourself to even more scrutiny in the future.

If you're worried about giving out your Social Security Number, consider forming an Limited Liability Company (LLC) in your state and using it to conduct business. This is more costly than running a business under your name.

Call the IRS and apply for an EIN. This can be done over the phone. If they ask why you need it, say you need it for banking purposes.

You would then put the EIN on the W-10s you give your clients and you will put the EIN as a cross reference number on your schedule C.

You can give them your employer id number if you have one, otherwise they are entitled to it and you will need to report the income on a Schedule C of your own.

You ae suposed to give them your SS or EIN number. Sice you are not a lic daycare you probably dont have an EIN #. You will have to report the income minus any expenses you have reciepts for on your Sch C self employment taxes. Goto IRS.gov for more reading on self employment income

wow.....that's hard.

but dear are u also aware that if they file u as their baby sitter.....u also need to report that income.

by giving them your ss# it just mean that your agreeing that your getting that amount of money.......which u should know how much PAYMENT they will be reporting......my suggestion give them receipt and keep a copy for yourself (for your record)......remember HARD copy are best evidence....if this family reported that they were paying u more.

If they pay you, then they have the right to ask you for it. If you're not willing to give it to them-they might let you go. How bad do you need that job?

Laura S
Yes you do. It is only fair, as they will get that amount of their income untaxed (up to a point), since they are paying it to someone else (you) as a wage and not keeping or spending it on themselves. They are an employer, you are the employee.

Also, if you only do this occassionally and make under $1000 yearly (I think the cutoff is $1000, but you may want to check this out), you don't have to declare your earnings - and won't get taxed. I had a regular babysitter that I paid about $600 a week, she would've had to declare for that amount though.

NOPE, not unless you hav an EIN. You have to give it to them and they have to put it on their return to get the child and dependent care credit. Same as you would have to give any employer your SSN on a W-4, but this is individual, not company. And you should be claiming the incme, which means you file a Schedule C, self employment and need to gather your records and receipts. You reduce your income by your expenses--diapers, wipes, food, toys, books, cleaning service, etc. Reducing your incme reported is good because it reduces your self employment tax. This earned income can even make you eligible for EIC. Make sure to keep records!

Best Answer:

I agree with you - you cannot trust everyone with your social security number. The fewer people who have it, the better off you are.

Get a Federal Employer Identification Number and give them that number. You can go to my website - http://www.TaxEfilers.com - look on the tabs to the left and choose "Starting New Business". You will find a link there which lets you connect to the IRS website and apply and receive your FEIN online today. Give them that number instead of your SS#.

Setting up an LLC is very expensive no matter what state you live in. In TN, it costs $400/year as a minimum fee. It can go much higher. Just get the FEIN! You'll be fine!

Good Luck!
And keep protecting your SS#!

That should have been discussed when you first started watching their children.

Yes, they need your social security number to report the child care payments. However, if they do that, you are going to have to report all of the income you have made working for them as income on your tax return. You could always try talking to them about this....saying you were under the impression that this was kind of a cash deal. If they want to start doing things officially in 2008, fine, but you are raising your rates to offset the income taxes you will be paying on that income.

kellybellybeans
They trust you with their child but you dont trust them with your SS# if your not comfortable giving them your SS# maybe you shouldnt be watching their child. Yes you have to give it to them!

Most Teen Sitters Don't Require Tax Payments
It's a question typically asked by families each year around tax preparation time: "Do I have to pay in any type of employment taxes for my children's teenage babysitter?" Typically, the answer is NO. Here's the scoop:

If you pay a household employee more than a certain amount (check the threshold each year), you may be required to pay Social Security, Medicare taxes, and to file the IRS Schedule H with your tax return. But not everyone is required to pay.

The IRS cites that you don't need to count wages paid to an employee who is younger than 18 at any time during the year. To confuse things a bit, you're supposed to count these wages if the employee's "principal occupation" is providing household services. However, if an employee is a student, then providing these household services isn't considered to be that individual's principal occupation. Or if they pay you over 1500.00
