You don't need to get in touch by phone, all you need to do is just fill in a P46 and your employer should send it off to their tax office that they deal with. Then they will receive a P9(T) and you will get a P2(New).
You employer might have online PAYE filing so the P46 can be done online.
Don't panic though, just think of the tax rebate when it's sorted.
Any new starter in any company should hand over a P45 and if you don't have one, complete a P46 which will trigger a tax code being sent to your employer.
I would only get in touch with HMRC if you wish to split a tax code between two employers. |

Has your employer asked you to sign form P46 to say that this is your only or main job, and have you done that? I assume you were previously in full-time education? If so, you should have indicated that on form P46. I would assume that your employer is operating a week/month 1 code number for you, as you say you are on emergency tax? If the form P46 has been completed, he can put you on a cumulative basis, and you would get any tax overpaid in your next wages.
Although you can earn £5225 per annum, before you are liable to tax, the tax system doesn't work that you get that amount immediately, and once you have gone over the limit, you start paying tax on all your income. The current allowance is £100 per week, so at the moment you would be entitled to that x the amount of weeks you didn't work. If you were getting jobseekers, that is taxable too, and the amount received would come off your back allowance.
Your employer can give you the phone number for his tax office, calls are now taken in large phone centres, and not in local offices. We can't give it to you here, because we don't know your location, or where the employer's tax office is. If you call them, you will need your employer's reference, and your National Insurance number. |

If your code no. is 522 (or higher) Don't Panic.
Contact your local HMRC office and they will arrange for the correct code no. to be issued to your employer.
Your personal allowance is £5225 p.a., but it's apportioned over the year.
If your earnings so far are under £3918 you should not have suffered any tax. |

Your employer will sort it out and is probably already on it..
it will probably take a couple of months don't expect those lazy b.....d civil servants to get their fingers out and hurry about it.
I've been overpaying tax by about £900 per month since April as they got my tax code wrong. Thye know it's wrong and say they're sorting it but say I'm still waiting. Their attitude is that it doesn't matter as I'll get it back at the end of theyear (without interest of course).
What makes it even more galling is that the same people say they've overpaid tax credits to me and want it back now! Ba.t.ds |

get in touch with the inland revenue on the web site it explains a lot more than i can i think you get the first £2000 free then you are taxed if my memory serves me well just go to www.inlandrevenue.co.uk you will get all the answers you need from their p.s. some employers pay emergency tax codes regardless so you may have to claim it back from the tax office its self at the end of the tax year its a bummer i know but that's just some employers others don't they allow you the money so its discretionary and down to individual companies |

Contact the Inland Revenue - there may be a local office near you (the number will be in your local phone book) and they will get you to complete a form and then give you a tax code. Yes you have a tax free allowance of approx. £5,300 before you pay tax at 10% and then 22% (until next April when all tax will be at 20% thanks to dodgy Gordon!) |

You'll get your tax code in due course, and you'll get your overpaid tax back.
You don't get the first £5000 tax free (this amount changes depending on your tax code), if you'll earn over £5000 you'll be taxed every month. If you earn under £5000 a year you won't be taxed. This confused me for ages! |
