Your mum will get a non dependant discount taken off any council tax benefit she was getting. This is because you are a non dependant now and expected to contribute towards the cost of services. |

Council tax pays for all your local amenities like libraries, parks, refuse collection, police, fire service etc! Who do you think should pay your share then? Get a job! |

You are paying for all the public services that your local council provides for the community. Libraries, parks, schools, rubbish collection, street lighting etc.etc.etc. |

Council taxed is based on a nominal property value. You can get a 25% reduction if you are the only adult living there, but it is not charged per person.
Edit: And now you are all grown up, why do you not feel that you have a duty to pay your way? The streets don't clean themselves. Schools need teachers, Libraries need to be run. Roads to be repaired. |

Everybody has to pay council tax and it has nothing to do with your house not being council. Council tax replaced the old Ground Rates charge and if you live in the house you have to pay it. The fact that you're old enough to have to pay it means you're of 'working' age so once you find work you'll be able to pay your own share for your mum. |

YOu have to pay it because it is to cover the amenites that the council provide in the street and area...street lights, safe paths, bin collection and emergency services....are you telling me you dont benefit from those thigs? Get a job and pay your own. |

You aren't paying for the house you are paying to living in the locality, street lighting, parking etc. Council tax sucks but equally you can't rant about it when your mummy is paying for you. Get a job or at least sign on as then she gets 25% off
p.s. you are legally obliged to pay your part, not your mum so don't forget to say thanka and make her a cup of tea every once in a while |

Council tax is paid by every house and goes into the council coffers. This then pays for local education, police, refuse collection, libraries, highways, also for council owned buildings and employees, traffic wardens the list goes on. We are all in the same boat.... |

Well Boo Hoo to you!
Once you've stopped spitting your dummy out of the pram, perhaps you can get off your ar$e and get a job and start paying your way.
I suggest collecting the litter from off the streets, seeing as you arent too keen on paying someone else to do it.... |

you shouldn't really get outraged about somethnig you know nothing about, that just plain daft.
learn about it, then figure out if its an injustice to you, THEN get outraged.
Really, you seem to go off like a bottle of pop. |

Council tax funds all local services, you should contribute to that. Why should you be any different from anyone else. I presume you use the water, sewage and all local services, these all come at a cost. There is no free ride buddy. get a job. |

your mother will have always paid council tax, its per household not per members of the household (except if there is only one adult in the household and therefore you get a 25% reduction in the fee).
Now you are grown up (i am guessing that she is no longer allowed the single person discount because you have turned 18), you need to get a job and contribute to the household and help your mum with the running of the house bills etc.
Thats life-nothing in life is free-unfortunatly |

Do you make some of the rubbish collected from your house. Do you visit the library. Who would you call if you were robbed/your house on fire/you were having a heart attack? All these services and more are paid from the council tax. Welcome to the grown up world! |

Unfortunately, council tax is a necessary evil, which applies to almost every household in the UK. It doesnt pay for your house, as such, but things like refuse collections, policing etc etc. Not sure why it makes a difference that you are living at home, because council tax is worked out via a system called banding, which assesses the property by its size mainly, so a larger property pays more council tax. |

Council Tax is levied on the owner/tenant of a property and applies to not just council houses. Your mother has to pay Council Tax because she is living in a house and is therefore the owner/tenant. It has nothing to do with how many live there, except that she could claim a 25% discount if she was living alone. If she is trying to pass some of the cost onto you, that is a matter between you and her. If you don't work, are not on benefit and therefore have no money, why does she expect you to contribute? Is she also giving you an allowance? |

well it is a good thing that your mum paying a council tax which will help to improve the community service like policing, collecting rubbish, funding school. but the question here is are you eligible to pay council tax because I think is not everybody should pay. the way to the calculate it is depend on the Valuation bands and normally is doesn't applies for the number of people living in the house. |

Welcome to the real world. You are an adult now and with this comes some responsibilities. You receive the benefits but have not had to pay for them in the past. We excuse children from contributing until they are grown up but once they reach adulthood they are expected to play their part in society.
You may feel that you are still immature but only Peter Pan got away with it indefinitely.
Why don't you have a job? If unemployment is high in your area then why do you not receive benefits? Something doesn't add up. I think you need to grow up. |
