I drive 25 miles to work everyday. Is there any way to claim miles or gas expenses on taxes?
Gas is costing me $8 per day to drive to and from work and I was just wondering if there is anyway to get some of this money back with taxes.

unless you "NEED" the car to do the job and you are required to take it home, NO.

Maybe when you bought the car you should have bought something a little more fuel efficient . . . .

No.

Commuting back and forth to work is never a deduction.

Commuting expenses are never deductible. If you own your own business AND have a qualified home office, then your business mileage would be deductible.

To be a qualified, the space (not necessarily a whole room) must be used exclusively for business and regularly for business. This means that if you use a spare bedroom, you cannot use it as a guest room or other non business purposes.

are you a realtor , self employed, or donating to a worthy cause? do you volunteer your time? so many loopholes, but be very honest and talk to your tax advisor in your state, there may be nothing you can do...see if anyone in your neighborhood needs rides and can chip in for fuel, cars running condition top notch? tires proper inflation? no flags or anything that causes drag hanging outside? heavy footed? good luck but even if oil barrel prices plummeted, gas prices wont drop...they now know we will pay the price

I was told about 24 years ago about the extra deductions only the RICH received. How did they do it, you need to have multiple streams of income. An employee only gets about 3 deductions per year were as a person with a home based business full or part time gets well over 150. So 24 years ago I started a home business and now today I get to write off 58 ½ cents per mile as I talk to others about building a home based business. So it’s like if gas is $4 per gallon and I fill up my car with 12 gallons it cost me $48. I get 36 miles to the gallon with my car so I get in deductions $252. So having the government as my silent partner, it’s like getting $200 extra for ever tank of gas I get. So if you are not in a home based business today – go out and start one today – if not, it will cost you thousands of dollars by not doing so.

no... it sucks but you cant....i wish though.

Michelle
Nope - that is your own expense. If you owned your own business, you could deduct them. But since you are working for someone else, that is your own expense.

Welcome to Colorful Colorado
Are you self employed? You can only claim mileage if you are self employed.

Kevin
if you are self employed then you can claim it, otherwise no.
